This was a wonderful interview! I particularly appreciated your thoughts on the artist's "responsibility to an audience." I think it's exactly correct that the energy and vitality of a musical or poetic work is "dependent upon someone to build the world of the song or poem for, someone to enter and enjoy it." As you say, the goal of a poem is, in the deepest sense of the word, to entertain, to "hold up something between" the poet and the reader. A poem can only live when it is intended as a gift, a service, and a communion with and for the reader. Your poems demonstrate that beautifully. Many thanks to you, Nick, and Nimrod for sharing this lovely conversation with all of us.

Fine poem by Ange Mlinko in latest NYRB (Feb.22,2024). It never fails, I have to look up a word or three when reading a Mlinko poem – which is good for me, and for you too no doubt.
