Probably the most important #python code I've ever written

@savostrowski I'm doing this now! I've not coded in python for a while! I've been stuck in C/C++/Obj-C. I'm currently writing a fastapi app with a sub-mounted Django app because why not!

This was to show that there is a @ operator in python that has been there since python 3.5, but is not used at all in the standard library! It's used for matrix multiplication in numpy, however if you define __matmul__, you can use it too!

Textual is pretty fast these days. Who would have thunk that you could implement a CSS layout and rendering engine in #Python and have it perform this fast, in a *terminal* ? It's fast enough, but there are still wins remaining. And we haven't done any C or Rust extensions.

It’s frustrating to watch your connection leave…from the other plane you are stuck on and then for you to park 5 minutes later. At least have the courtesy of being extremely late so I don’t feel so slighted!

I’m stuck in Newark for the night. My @united flight from ILM was delayed, and then despite us being at Newark, we missed the connection since we couldn’t get to a gate. We were here at the airport and there were at least 13+ people and United ops didn’t think to maybe delay it!

All full of original tubes, 60-70 years old, most have never been open and basically brand new in box!

For my birthday, my grandpa gave me his old vacuum tube chest. He did in home tv and radio repair as a side job in the 1950s and 1960s. According to him he would carry this with one arm and a mirror under the other so he could see the tv while working on the back!

@kefimochi BoJack, any Star Trek series, the office, parks and Rec, Brooklyn 99, and battlestar galactica (2003)! I’m rewatching battlestar right now! It’s like reading a book for me!

I love conversions and the use of units that should not be used to describe something, like mechanical horsepower to electrical kilowatts 😅

There is aprox 1.3e9 joules in 10 gal of gas. That would be 484.3 hph.

I got a pre-owned 2022 Nissan Leaf last December as I really needed a car. If my battery is measured in kWh (as all electrical storage generally is), why don't ICE cars measure their gas tank in horsepower-hours? 🤨🤔

@willmcgugan I actually just had to add a repr to a class I made that inherited from list and dict for debugging same object issues. Built in type classes don't use that standard format it seems! Perhaps you are on to something! They just give a string representation of the contents!

Would it be crazy to change #Python's default repr? Here's an example: >>> f <__main__.Foo object at 0x10367fca0> The hex is the address of the Python object, and on CPython the same as id(f) For the 99.999% case, it is useless information, and can only confuse novices.

It’s interesting my cat seems to be able to count to 3. If I pick up her three favorite toys and she sees me pick them up, she will not chase until the same three been thrown. I hide them behind my back so it’s not like she can see them left in my hand. She just knows!

@kefimochi My cat destroys the bottom of my couch. She loves it down there. My childhood dog only ever chewed the feet of the couch since they were wood! I’d say my cat though has done more damage!!

@willmcgugan Like sure there is tkinter and things like QT, but you have to worry about a lot more stuff then. I guess I missed the era of MVC desktop coding so it’s a bit foreign to me. Textual allows me to use those web techniques without having to go full bore into more traditional MVC

@willmcgugan I also am terrible at actual gui stuff, most of my interfaces are very simple websites driven by flask. Being able to not stand up all the web server to have a gui is very appealing to me.

I have a theory that TUIs appeal to two age groups in particular. 20 somethings who are seeing these apps afresh, and 45+ devs who are nostalgic about the terminal. Does that seem plausible? If so, how can I reach that middle segment?
