@erosionwatts 3 At my Viva I started by shaking the hands of the examiners and thanking them for taking an interest in my work. That broke the ice, I felt much more confident and the viva became a very interesting chat.

@mosquitotalks I applied to a number of different programs and really considered where they were. You’ll be spending a number of years there so you want to be able to enjoy the place you’ll be living. I have broad interests so knew that I’d most likely enjoy the proposed topics

@erosionwatts Do you have any tips for prospective PhD students? 😭😅
English

@erosionwatts I got my MSc at the UiS. All the time I spent there was amazing. People are really nice in Norway. Enjoy a lot.

@erosionwatts 1- Get organised in your litterature review, its the art of science. Stand on shoulders of giant.
2- take Time to have critical thinking and always ask what are your contribution to science
3-prepare life After the PhD
4-assess regularly your skills in terms of long-term goals.

@erosionwatts So exciting!! Embrace every minute of it — the good and the bad. Good luck!
English

@stratfoj Thanks, I appreciate that advice. I’ll definitely need to bear in mind your last point as I can be a bit of a perfectionist at times!
English

@ScottYo02474468 That’s the plan, hoping to get a half decent grasp of the language over the next four years. I’ll definitely drop you a message too. Hope you enjoyed your time in Norway!
English

@erosionwatts Try to learn Norwegian if you can. I just returned to US after 11 years working in Oslo w Statoil/Equinor as structural geologist. Feel free to reach out if you need any contacts. Lykke til!
English

@tiberi_simone Will definitely be doing that, thanks for the heads up!
English

@erosionwatts My tip: next summer wait for a sunny week (not that common...), and book for last minute 1 week holiday in the Lofoten (and don't forget about Vaeroy!).
