@eshugerman It actually isn’t, given that GLP-1s quite literally are a lifeline to people with binge eating disorders. The persistent fixation on food as the enemy to defeat, an obsession and disregulation that overrides your thinking everyday, all the time, GLP1s can neutralize all of that.

so many people are dunking on that Cut wegovy article, but this is actually a beautiful description of what it’s like to be in eating disorder recovery

@LizHighleyman I’m glad it’s helping you! I think GLP-1s can help a lot of people’s relationship with food, but I’m specifically talking here about restrictive eating disorders like anorexia, in which case I think an appetite-inhibiting drug would be counterproductive

@eshugerman It is. I don’t have a diagnosed eating disorder, but have fought that lack of control over food my whole life. But taking tirzepatide made it just go away.

@LizHighleyman I think recovery is a long process; it ebbs and flows and sometimes the disordered voices are louder than others. But that tendency toward wanting control, to wanting to weigh and measure everything — I think that’s something a lot of people have to actively fight for life

@eshugerman That doesn’t sound like recovery to me. “Recovering,” maybe, but it’s clearly still a persistent struggle. Ironically, a GLP-1 med might make that focus on food go away, but she’s dead set against trying.

@theronrockstone I’m with you, I am 100 percent not endorsing the way she treated her friend, just appreciating her description of this mindset specifically

@eshugerman I agree, and the dunks quote the worst parts. But also, it’s a bit frustrating to see the incuriosity about whether the friend may be using a GLP-1 for reasons other than thinness, bodily perfection, or appearance generally.
