If you were interpreting the term somewhat widely, what poems would you include in a unit on "Protest Poetry"? (I already have plenty of ideas on poems relating to ethnicity, racism and identity)

Do I know anyone on here who has reading rulers as part of their whole school approach to reading? Not just in English lessons…

My masters project focused on trialling Leave Taking with some Year 10s. Nobody can convince me that AIC is the ‘best that’s been thought and written’ when Leave Taking is on offer. A beautifully crafted modern drama with pertinent and engaging themes.

1. For AQA GCSE Lit, My Name Is Leon, Princess & The Hustler, and Leave Taking offer powerful ways to engage students while reflecting Britain’s real cultural stories. A thread about why and how 🧵

It’s time for @RiverAcReading’s second ever Open Evening. Excited to celebrate all the exciting things that have been happening in the English department and show off our students’ hard work.

Okay, she's finished! Since teaching the essay as a piece of writing rather than as unconnected 'paragraphs', our results have been pretty great. Our SEN pupils outperformed our non-SEN pupils for the first time ever this year. However...(A thread) drive.google.com/drive/folders/…

Six short, modern fiction extracts for students to read, explore and enjoy douglaswise.co.uk/blog/literary-… The final task in each set is a creative writing challenge 📚

With all this talk of reading tests, I can’t help but think there are better ways to spend money to improve reading. In our 1st year @RiverAcReading moved our first cohort of students from the 52nd percentile nationally, to the 73rd for reading. Link in thread to find out how.

@LauraCurranBun We also expect 100% completion. We set it Friday-Friday and any student who hasn’t competed it stays behind to get it done. Lots of support from SLT necessary and a clear rationale has been shared with parents - nobody gets left behind!

@LauraCurranBun We have had lots of success with it. We give merits for early completion and for students going over and above. We build a sense of competition between classes and students are constantly reminded about it via their teacher/line-ups/tutor.

Sparx reader: anyone use it? If so, how do you champion it, reward it, promote it, hike completion rates up etc? Looking to really capitalise on it for our school and looking for good strategies please! Thank you 🤞🏼

I have turned all our Macbeth lessons into a booklet - I just like having them for off-site pupils, anyone out of lesson etc. Sharing in case you are a booklety sort of school! It is literally just our powerpoints copied and pasted into booklet form :) drive.google.com/drive/folders/…
