The Women's Reservation Isn't Active Yet. The #DMK and #Congress claim they've blocked #Delimitation and that #WomenReservation is already in effect. But have they actually read the Women's Reservation Act, 2023? The Constitution (106th Amendment) clearly states that the 33% reservation for women will come into force only after the next Census is conducted, its data is published, and a delimitation exercise is completed based on that data. In other words, without delimitation, the reservation cannot be implemented. By opposing delimitation, they are effectively delaying the rollout of women's reservation itself. Without delimitation, reservation cannot be implemented.

Why not divide the existing 543 seats and just give 33% to women right away? Because the law passed in 2023 says: Women’s reservation will start only AFTER two things happen: 1. A new Census 2. Delimitation (based on that Census) Right now, neither has happened because when the govt tried to change this in 2026, to remove the Census requirement and fast-track implementation, the proposal was defeated. So the original rule still applies. No Census = No Delimitation = No Women’s Reservation yet.

By defeating the Delimitation and Constitutional Amendment Bill, the opposition parties have done a great disservice to the Nation. With the freeze under Article 81 set to end after the first Census conducted post 2026, the forthcoming census exercise will reset seat distribution purely on population, potentially leading to a steep decline in representation for Southern, North-Eastern, and smaller states. The NDA’s proposal was a sincere effort to preserve federal balance, protect the voice of Southern, North-Eastern, and smaller states, and ensure 33% representation for women. It recognised that states which have performed well on key development indicators should not be penalised in the democratic structure. It is unfortunate that political agendas have prevailed over long term national interest. Opposing parties should seriously question themselves; what have they achieved ? While the reality is that the numbers would come down for the south and women reservation bill has been postponed ! Justice is rendered neither to the south nor the women! If 2026 census were to come the situation would be worse off for the south, further penalised for being disciplined in the matters of family planning.

Tamil Nadu has 39 seats. If we were to implement reservation within these existing 543 seats as per the DMK's demand, then 13 seats would be reserved for women and only 26 would remain open.
