@tessdots Imagine a row of pool balls. If you hit one, it'll knock into the next and start a chain reaction. You can watch the movement go along the line as if it was a wave, but also each individual ball is it's own particle. Does that help visualise it?

@tessdots Yeah basically. If we're talking about the ionising radiations then we mostly discuss alpha and beta as particles and gamma as a wave, but they can behave as either depending on the measurement being taken. This applies to all other particles and waves in general too

@eugeeene so sometimes radiation acts like particles and sometimes it acts like waves?

@tessdots So in quantum mechanics we can describe light as a wave which carries energy, but also as individual "packets" of energy called photons which behave as particles that "make up" the wave. There's an experiment called the double slit experiment that was the first to discover it

@tessdots Yeah, heat is just a measure of how much wiggling atoms are doing basically. There's a concept called wave-particle duality which says that depending on how you measure it particles like photons can either behave like waves or particles

@tessdots So all three of those are ionising radiation because they have the energy required to strip electrons from atoms. Non-ionising radiation is any kind that isn't energetic enough to do that, like microwaves, radio waves or even visible light (all of which are traditionally waves)
