@VicVijayakumar As most tech, monoliths are totally a "right tool for the job" kind of thing. But what's interesting is to write a monolith well, you have to be very disciplined about the boundaries of your modules. Writing it lambda first had a great side effect: it enforced that discipline.

Someone is going to come here and say that serverless-first was a mistake & they should have started w/ a monolith. The team explained that they wanted each component to be independently scalable. The root issue was transporting data between components, not it being serverless.

In case you missed it- The Prime Video team originally built a Video Quality Analysis service very quickly with Lambda + Step Functions. They soon realized that passing data between distributed components was expensive. So they refactored their code to run as a single service.

@eurasian It is basically a little motorcycle you push around, but you're standing behind the exhaust the whole time.

I’ve owned a gas powered lawn mower since 2008 which I take very good care of, and it still works. But it always left me and the yard smelling like gas, and needing a shower after I used it. Bought an electric mower this morning. Wow, just why did I wait so long.

I hate that I replaced a mower which still works. I replaced a mower I can take apart and maintain with one that’s completely magical and has expensive electronic parts. But…I didn’t inhale a crap ton of gas fumes for 30 mins mowing the lawn today. 🤷🏾‍♂️

Hmmm. I just had a bizarre experience, involving a global news organisation and a trillion dollar corporation. (I got caught in the middle, so... owch.) It’s not the sort of experience the people involved usually talk about in public… so I think I’ll talk about it in public. 🧵

the magic of backwards compatibility is that if you make a website exactly the same way someone would have in 2005, it will still work just fine (though I would use flexbox, flexbox is way easier than whatever we had in 2005)

I automatically assume my coworkers who have their Christmas trees up in the background of our video calls fully have their lives together. Must be nice.
