Had to go see Project Hail Mary right away (it's based on the book of Andy Weir, of also The Martian fame). Both very pleased and relieved to say that 1) the movie sticks very close to the book in both content and tone and 2) is really well executed. The book is one of my favorites when it comes to alien portrayals because a lot of thought was clearly given to the scientific details of an alternate biochemistry, evolutionary history, sensorium, psychology, language, tech tree, etc. It's different enough that it is highly creative and plausible, but also similar enough that you get a compelling story and one of the best bromances in fiction. Not to mention the other (single-cellular) aliens. I can count fictional portrayals of aliens of this depth on one hand. A lot of these aspects are briefly featured - if you read the book you'll spot them but if you haven't, the movie can't spend the time to do them justice. I'll say that the movie inches a little too much into the superhero movie tropes with the pacing, the quips, the Bathos and such for my taste, and we get a little bit less the grand of Interstellar and a little bit less of the science of The Martian, but I think it's ok considering the tone of the original content. And it does really well where it counts - on Rocky and the bromance. Thank you to the film crew for the gem!

I have seen a lot of AI generated "feel good" posts. This isn't one of them! We are real humans just trying to find a home for my dad's train room which is simply world class. He has been carefully constructing buildings (each individually selected and shipped from Germany) since I was a kid and actually put it all together only about 5 or 6 years ago. There's a wedding and a funeral, a beer garden, old school McDonald's, and he even put an airstream at a campsite for his dear old daughter. I only recently realized on a trip to Germany with him that the gardens along the tracks are faithful reproductions of what you see on the train from Munich to Germany. My mom passed away and he is 80, so he's moving to a smaller place. The craftsmanship is next level and only a few children– just my kids, my nieces and nephews have ever seen it. My friend, who painted a number of murals for our local children's museum, stepped in to finish painting the landscape when my mom got sick. We aren't trying to sell it– just trying to find it a good home. I simply can't imagine throwing it away. The local children's museum loves it but doesn't have space. We are hoping for a miracle– to find a space for all he has done. Anyway– DMs open HMU if fate is on both of our sides. TYIA @NtlChildMuseum @childrensmuseu2 @cmorva @vmtroanoke @smv_rva

My guess is that "advanced technological tools" means just driving around and detecting WiFi networks with MAC addresses that ID them as SpaceX devices. The solution is to disable WiFi on Starlink and either use ethernet, or to connect a 3rd party WiFi AP to it.

This tweet got over 1M views so we made it a video: How much money does Meta make by enabling crimes? "Internal docs leaked to Reuters show: • 10% of all Meta revenue comes from ads for scams & banned goods ($16B/year) • Meta estimates it's involved in 1/3 of all successful scams in the US • That suggests they drive $50B in scam losses for US consumers alone each year • Meta earns ~$3B annually from scam/banned goods ads run by Chinese operations alone..."

Latest podcast from @Gregory_C_Allen has an insane section on criminal activity at Meta. Internal docs leaked to Reuters show: • 10% of all Meta revenue comes from ads for scams & banned goods ($16B/year) • Meta estimates it's involved in 1/3 of all successful scams in the US • That suggests they drive $50B in scam losses for US consumers alone each year • Meta earns ~$3B annually from scam/banned goods ads run by Chinese operations alone The China case study: • In 2024, Meta made $18B+ from Chinese companies advertising to foreign consumers • Internal teams found ~19% was scams/banned content • An anti-fraud team successfully cut these ads in half • When Zuckerberg saw the revenue impact, he told them to "pause" and the team was disbanded • By mid-2025, banned ads climbed back to 16% of China revenue • This results in money being stolen and going directly from ordinary Americans to Chinese criminals The deliberate enabling: • Fraud earns 10% of all revenue, but anti-fraud teams were blocked from any action costing >0.15%, so they couldn't effectively do anything • Meta charged higher rates for suspected fraudulent ads — a "scam tax" • Their algorithm naturally identifies people vulnerable to frauds and feeds them more and more The cold calculation: • Meta anticipated up to $1B in regulatory fines for this • But they make $3.5B every 6 months from high-risk ads • They view these fines as just "cost of doing business" Senators Blumenthal & Hawley now calling for FTC/SEC investigations in a blistering letter, noting that all this happened while Meta cut safety staff and moved billions over to VR and AI. WTF.

@NathanpmYoung Failure to routinely enforce laws also creates the possibility of selective enforcement, at the whim of the enforcers. I don't think that ends well.

Boze the Library Owl 😴🧙‍♀️
The web’s transformation from a place of knowledge to a place of mindless amusements is soul-crushing. The places where you could once access books have been gutted. Billionaires seek to dismantle Wikipedia. We built & destroyed the Library of Alexandria in a few years.

the internet is no longer a place to explore. it is literally just five giant apps consisting entirely of screenshots of text from the other four apps.

Easily the funniest part of the government's argument, IMO. Essentially, they're saying that Hegseth's "Effective immediately" tweet was so obviously unlawful and unenforceable that Anthropic shouldn't be allowed to challenge it.

The fact that they'll do this in a time of emergency to curb prices tells you all you need to know about the Jones Act — It's a baseline tax on all American consumers. Abolish the Jones Act. Permanently.

Germany has the world’s most insane laws on genetic testing. The country legally bans parents from testing embryos for down syndrome, but publicly funds abortions for the pregnancies down syndrome embryos create. The more you look into it, the more cursed it gets.
