@danylanzhou literally and it just makes it all the more frustrating when you’re trying to find people to make friends with discuss these writings with, except everyone seems to complain about assigned readings in uni!

@evildosntexist it’s just a game of consumerism to them 😭 and neatly logging their books into some pretty tracker app. at this point put a christina rosetti poem in front of them and their eyes would glaze over but 100 slop books in a month is easy peasy

the death of literacy can be seen in how, when i was little, my children’s literature consisted of works like dragon rider, anne of green gables, the secret garden, inkheart, etc, and nowadays adults only read booktok trash slop and would never be able to get through those books

@danylanzhou they’ll show off their book collections and flaunt how much they read online but when you actually try to talk with them about literature its all stutters from there

and if you tell them to read a classic even like the secret garden or anne of green gables they’ll pitch a hissy fit and make up every “i have glass bones and paper skin” excuse under the sun

@evildosntexist @polen_ball Oh yeah unification is definitely unpopular, but even in a hypothetical where over 50% supported unification the US would try to prevent it as much as it could It's really just a sad situation with no good outcome for Taiwan, it's been reduced to a pawn for both China and the US

I guess I'm one of the few communists who would never support an armed invasion of Taiwan under any circumstances. It's crazy how many people fall for irredentist nationalism. There's nothing the Chinese or Taiwanese people would ever gain from war

@NeptunesOrgit @polen_ball in part to the US yes, the US’ policy towards Taiwan is essentially what created the status-quo to begin with, but even without the factor of the US, Taiwan would not want to unify and would see those type of politicians as extremists

@evildosntexist @polen_ball Yeah it's unfeasible now but the reason that fell through is I feel at least in part due to US influence. Neither can claim to be independent and the US would never allow Taiwan to unify. I think status-quo is locked in for the foreseeable unless something drastic happens

the US and China are the same type of imperial powers at the end of the day, theres no better! kill the global hegemony!

@antituwust China presently seems to be a better steward of a liberal international order than the US tbh

@NeptunesOrgit @polen_ball the hong kong deal as a way to end the conflict has essentially been a dead option since the 2019 protests, people in taiwan used to believe in it but now things are just back to the same three options: status-quo, independence, or unification

@polen_ball China Taiwan feels so weird to me because I feel like if they both existed in a vacuum they'd reach a Hong Kong type deal, it's only the world around them that prevents it. (they had a period of rapprochement in the 2010s) I don't think anyone really wants an armed conflict

it’s not mentioned often but i love how dany’s relationship with her womanhood and her awarness of misogynistic oppression is shown through her refusal of certain customs before her wedding, feminism is obv not a movement that exists in asoiaf, but she displays feminist ideas

@WillWrite_ @ChadNotChud what is taiwan’s current state? a place where they have their own government? where people are entitled to their full rights in voting, protest, and speech? a place where they have degree of self-determination? think about that and reflect on what “staus-quo” means

@ChadNotChud The people in Taiwan overwhelmingly wish to maintain the status quo indefinitely and seek a resolution at a later date, not “stay independent”. Taiwan is not independent. Not even Taiwan says it is. When you call for independence you call for the less popular position in Taiwan.

If this were the case and 80 years later Texas abolished slavery and became a pluralistic democracy with a distinct national identity and overwhelmingly wished to stay independent, then I mean, yeah I’d feel how I do about Taiwan
Post-Left Watch (postleftwatch.bsky.social)@PostLeftWatch

Hasan Piker explains Taiwan as if the Confederacy ruled America, the Union took it over, but Texas (Taiwan) still remained a Confederate state, and that the world still gives them weapons to use as a stronghold against the Union.
