Andy Burnham’s approach to his idea of raising the personal tax allowance perhaps demonstrates the risks of his more empathetic and conversational style In an interview with @patrickkmaguire at the weekend he suggested he was considering the tax cut He leant into the idea while talking to reporters on Monday, confirming it was being looked at Then on Tuesday allies suggested he wouldn’t proceed with what would be a multi-billion pound policy, stressing he’d made no commitment But on Wednesday morning Burnham opened the door again, saying he’d “look at that at the budget” It’s a step change compared to Keir Starmer, who steadfastly refused to discuss tax policy outside of fiscal events but was often criticised for his wooden style and cautious language Burnham by contrast is more willing to discuss his ideas publicly before they are fully formed. The danger is that sends a confusing signal to markets at a time when he’s also trying to convince investors of his commitment to fiscal discipline “It’s perhaps the way politics is these days and the way people report things, but that was an honest answer,” Burnham said this morning in an attempt to explain the confusion
