UK government to increase heat pump grants to £9000 for those with oil and LPG heating. Generous for sure but fully closes the risk of a cost gap and may even provide a small excess for those with small homes (typically the least well off). (1/2)
Ed Miliband@Ed_Miliband

We’re facing the second fossil fuel shock in less than 5 years. Events far away are once again impacting families and businesses here at home. We can’t go on leaving our country so exposed. The solution lies in clean homegrown power we control. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

1/8 With Britain’s gas storage levels back in the news, here’s what you need to know. Gas storage is a complex topic, so it’s easy for data to be misunderstood or taken out of context.

Switching a home heated by gas to a heat pump reduces the fossil gas used by that home by over 75%. No other technology gets close to such a big gas demand reduction.

Good article explaining how UK competition has helped in Kraken’s development. However, electricity market design and latest REMA intentions, are well behind the technological and innovation curve in placing value. That’s not good. on.ft.com/42UgakW

I agree @g__j - it’s v diff to know what is intended. The language leaves it open for many options. Is this disingenuous? Or does it mean we may get an energy system reset improved from zonal pricing (not difficult)? Absence of distribution discussion is major problem.
Greg Jackson@g__j

Quick thoughts on this mornings zonal announcement… big question is what’s the plan to get costs down. It’s urgent and families and businesses need costs to fall.

@ClemCowton Yes. Unless it delays going for nodal and limits longer term savings (which I'm worried it might). (do it once and do it proper)

For anyone making a submission to the Ofgem Review (end date 28 Feb) key IGov documents are available on a new site igov.exeter.ac.uk It is a gd source of refs showing the laxity of Ofgem in meeting key regulatory challenges. Plus it sets out a fit for purpose governance

another reminder of the Review of Ofgem - end date 28 Feb. UK has a set of institutions (incl Ofgem) which are not fit for purpose for delivering a rapid increase in the reduction of GHG emissions & a rapid move to SE which is gd for env, security and cost. They have to be reset.

Yup - I doubt v much that Britain can magically deliver cheaper nuclear power plants. To my knowledge, that’s been the goal of the last 40 yrs. Moreover, they now act as giant boulders on a motorway in a smart energy system on a small island. Not a good way to keep prices down.

It would be very interesting to see if the famed efficiency of KEPCO can match the might of the British state’s capacity to make things harder than they ought to be

Demand side flexibility / management is technically possible & good for consumers (cost of living issues / fuel poverty), the environment, security and competition. Reminder to everyone: Feb 28 is the end date for submissions to the Review of Ofgem. Please make your views known.
Greg Jackson@g__j

A grotesque example of how the energy system screws consumers Worse, our bureaucratic overlords eviscerated the Demand Flexibility Service which could have reduced this. Even the rump service paid consumers 5 times less per kWh than these gas giants theguardian.com/business/2025/…
