I missed saying anything when this came out back in November, but it's just been added to Oxford Scholarship Online. Come for the pictures, stay for the illuminating insights about mensural notation oxford.universitypressscholarship.com/view/10.1093/o…

‘Where Sight Meets Sound’ by @ezazulia reframes our understanding of late-medieval musical notation as a dynamic, innovative system—one that could be used to generate music, not just preserve it. Buy the book today, now 30% off with code AAFLYG6. #MedRen23 bit.ly/3NL1Jsc

@chris_nygren Wow—I never realized Titian and Josquin shared a death date. (500 this year in the latter case.)

He outlived many of his children and friends. And this painting - the final painting he worked on, leaving it incomplete upon his death - was meant to adorn his tomb. The fact that he died during an outbreak of the plague makes the anniversary of his death esp. poignant this year

27 Aug. is a strange day for me. This year is 445th anniversary of Titian's death. In writing a book on him, I came to see him as deeply human - not a "genius," not a hero, but a painter of great intelligence, humanity and suffering.

@mormolyke 600 years ago this wouldn’t have been a problem! We had and gave up on base 3 notation

And I’m pretty sure that today was going to the the anniversary of Becket’s murder whether or not the White House weighed in:

I’m all for people learning about medieval history, but this “proclamation” is not that. For one, the conflict between Henry and Becket wasn't about religious liberty, but the *separation* of church and state. whitehouse.gov/presidential-a…
