The C-2 is currently in production but only has a planned max production run of 22 airframes. The US doesn't have an equivalent; we have the lighter C-130 for tactical ops and the heavier four-engined C-17. While we need to either field a C-17 successor or restart the C-17 line, if we could find a role for this airframe in our doctrine and TO&E - perhaps as a regional trans-shipment jet for redistributing bigger payloads brought in via C-17/C-5 to a forward base well outside of the primary Chinese conventional ballistic missile threat zone, such as Wake and/or for domestic or trans-Atlantic use for routine cargo/shuttle flights - it'd not only take load off the C-17 fleet (at the cost of having to maintain parallel training/maint pipelines; perhaps some of that can simply be outsourced more heavily to Kawasaki contractors,) but what would qualify as a relatively modest buy for the USAF would likely at least double the entire planned C-2 production run. The unit-cost savings would translate directly to more C-2 and C-2 based platforms that Japan can afford to buy; it could also incentivize adoption for Europe/major non-NATO allies as well. The C-17 and C-130 are both incredible but there's a niche between them this jet fills neatly and likely fits many allied requirements better. I can think of ten billion reasons this wouldn't work but a man can dream
