During NREM sleep, sharp-wave ripples synchronize across the dorsal-ventral hippocampus, reactivating neural assemblies. This reactivation is more faithful after aversive experiences—thanks to stronger recruitment of shock-responsive neurons in the ventral hippocampus.

We showed that ventral neurons better code the shock experience than dorsal ones. Also, dorsal and ventral neurons showed coordinated activity during both emotional experiences that remained during the subsequent sleep epoch 😴.
