My statement via @CopticMediaUK [tinyurl.com/yvz53hcy] after the heinous attack on worshippers at Heaton Park Synagogue, Manchester. “Places of worship are safe havens, with people at their most exposed and vulnerable as they open themselves up in prayer and worship, so attacks on them are especially deplorable. We must recognise that rhetoric of hatred and division which we see increasing in daily discourse will undeniably give rise to such attacks. There is no excuse for violence and terrorism, and we must all strive not to be part of anything that leads to incitement or hatred towards those who are deemed ‘the other’. There is now a need for leadership at every level to ensure words and actions that bring a sense of justice, peace, calm and resolve to communities that are suffering deeply as a result of today’s tragedy.”

Have been following the conversation around the Paris Olympics #OpeningCeremony. The content depicting the apparent parody of the Last Supper is inappropriate, grossly offensive and sacrilegious, and entirely unacceptable. At a moment in time that presented an opportunity for unifying people, and bringing joy and healing to a world increasingly torn apart by conflict, war, religious persecution, and division on many levels, more unnecessary offence, hurt and distraction has been caused. I will be sharing my thoughts in greater depth in the coming days, but to everyone who is justifiably offended, saddened and concerned that such a beautiful moment in history, and one that is core to the Christian Faith, was so misrepresented, I assure you that you are not alone.
