@PrimaryCinema Tbh one of the most overused trends in horror rn is framing every shot with tons of headroom to create loneliness, unease, disempowerment. It's become such an uninspired choice, v glad Backrooms didn't go for it too often (sry if this is genuinely just a joke abt the painting)

@cumboy33596823 @gay_kyle2 I know exactly what you’re talking about and it rules, I go to different pta movies for different reasons but audacious needle drops are absolutely a signature part of his style

@fakecaden @gay_kyle2 If youve seen the movie you know what im talking about, and its literally 4 or 5 famous songs back to back; the pool party, where a bunch of shit happens, so it works, kind of. Also you kind of imply people go to a PTA movie for needle drops?

“Can you believe boogie nights was made by a 26 year old” yeah I can. In fact it’s one of the easiest movies to imagine being made by a 26 year old

@cumboy33596823 @gay_kyle2 Ah man this jackie chan movie has four scenes in a row where jackie chan fights guys. One too many weird rubber aliens in star wars for my liking. Loved fury road but could have used one less car chase

2010s blockbusters loved having allegories that don't mean anything in real life. "Anyone can wear the mask" in SPIDERVERSE. "The force belongs to everyone" in THE LAST JEDI. Those aren't real things.

@HowardLeaderman Cmon man the winkys scene is one of the best in his career. The interesting thing is I do think the unaired pilot is genuinely pretty sauceless, but in the film it all works for me. Of course we all would’ve loved to see him make more movies that look like Lost Highway

@fakecaden Of course, the question after this is directly related to whether or not the creepy Lynchisms through that first section, which to me have always felt weightless in that TV way, figure into this idea productively or not. Up to personal taste.

Mulholland Drive, far from bad, does need to be better understood as being mostly shot and conceived in the realm of television rather than theatrical cinema. Keeping it in conversations around the greatest of all time is incompatible with the canon it's been placed within.

@HowardLeaderman Sure, but the way the film affects the feeling and language of tv until the reshot third act enters and pulls the rug out from under you also boils down to an intentional and effective formal choice. Just as TP’s soap elements are a feature not a bug.

@fakecaden This also goes along with intent within production. If you stitched 6 episodes of Married with children together unchanged and played it on a big screen, that doesn't make it cinema. Make a film conceptualized around being in sitcom form? Different story.

@HowardLeaderman Should that be inherently disqualifying? Great films often use the form (rhythm & camera) in ways that aren’t conventionally “cinematic”. At the end of the day the mixed media nature works for the story being told. Inland Empire arguably had a more out of the box production style

@fakecaden Mulholland dr is, in rhythm and camera, closer to very high quality HBO-esque prestige television a la The Sopranos or Dead Wood compared to Lost Highway or Blue Velvet. This isn't a flaw, but a fact of its material production and formal manifestation. Like Twin Peaks to the soap

@lispeaks_ Cooked term. One time I heard an actual studio exec explain it as “high concept just means it doesn’t take place in the real world, when we call a spec script high concept that’s another way of saying it’s fantasy or sci fi”.

i think nearly 100% of the times i've heard something described as "high concept" they've used it to describe the opposite of what the term actually means
