Very different profiles; Marmoush is probably better in a very transitional team — when he has space to thrive in. A big reason why he likes playing Newcastle so much. Alvarez is better in tight spaces and against low-blocks. Offers more solutions. Both great players.

@falsewinger_ Don’t agree personally but each to their own. I suppose I think we hold a very high standard to first touch having Doku, Foden, Cherki and Bernardo in the side — having a poor touch really sticks out. Grealish was excellent in this regard too.

@falsewinger_ Don’t think Marmoush has a great first touch and isn’t really suited to pocket & combination play. Ball-striking, movement elite. But just feel Alvarez had a little more technically. Would say Omar is probably the more explosive one.

@falsewinger_ Give Alvarez the slightest space and he will absolutely take advantage of it. Great at manipulating himself into getting high quality chances. Was trusted as an 8 and 10. Much more technical than Omar imo.

📊🇧🇪 Matte Smets, data report ➡️ Prototype dueler/progressor CB archetype. + handles a monster volume of passes in possession, arguably the singular best predictor for scaling on-ball ability of young center backs to the brighter lights; the simplified thinking being that they wouldn't see that much of the ball if they weren't good enough to produce with it... 'touches are earned' + also very accurate on high degree of difficulty passes like long balls and progressives, albeit on a low rate of action so he can be "selective" + strong carrier in space + excellent duel winner; semi-selective but precise when he engages + good enough in the air, but long-term I think there are limitations with his size - ok it is more of a negative... he's only 6'1" (185 cm) and that will likely hinder his ability to defend the penalty area and in the air at the highest levels - carrying is limited to space... not really great 1v1, although he mostly just passes out of tight spots to avoid the duels in the first place - lower rate of high degree of difficulty passes means his passing success rates could be a bit "fake"... because Genk is so comfortable in possession, he has the luxury to pick and choose when to attempt those types of passes, but at the same time, it could just show a level of maturity 💬 Passes completed x Defensive duel success rate is one of the best simple plots for finding a specific type of modern CB archetype... the Saliba, Upamencano, Thiaw, Colwill's of the world were all dominant in both regards at a young age, and Smets is the best in T9 leagues in this regard this season. And he's a strong ball carrier. So that's really sick. But at the same time, he has his limitations with his height and sometime it can be difficult to extricate quality in numbers (and even the eye test) from guys that play for dominant sides in lower leagues. Excited to watch him today though - not that he doesn't already have a good amount of buzz, but I think it will pick up as the season winds down (especially if Genk keeps advancing).
