The International Symposium on Artificial Intelligence and Nuclear Energy in Vienna opened with a simple but powerful idea. Every major technological breakthrough has been enabled by a new energy backbone. IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi brought it to life by walking through history: 🚂 Steam engines and coal 🔌 Electricity powered by hydro and fossil fuels 📱 Digitalization fueled by gas and renewables Now we’ve reached the next chapter. AI and nuclear energy. Grossi made the case clearly. AI demands massive amounts of continuous, reliable power with low carbon emissions. Nuclear is the only energy source that meets all of those requirements at scale. And the relationship goes both ways. Nuclear will power AI, and AI will accelerate nuclear through better operations, modeling, and simulation. The symposium closed with a panel on nuclear supply chains and how AI can help solve future bottlenecks, a topic that hit close to home. At First American Nuclear, supply chain readiness is core to how we think. EAGL-1 and its surrounding facilities are designed to use multiple fuel types for flexibility, and to be manufactured and assembled using existing factories and off the shelf components. When it comes to the surge of U.S. investment in nuclear energy, we say, better late than never. 🇺🇸 @business published an excellent piece about how the need for more power is drawing billions in investment to nuclear energy companies, but that we’re still at least six years out from realizing affordable nuclear power at scale. This is true. It’s also true that hard tech takes time. ⏳ Consider SpaceX was founded in 2002 and delivered its first paid customer payload seven years later. It reported its first profit 20 years later, in 2023, but not before delivering significant value to employees and investors. Do we wish U.S. investment in nuclear energy would have rekindled 10 years ago, or better yet, never stalled in the first place? YES! Is every nuclear technology startup going to succeed? No way. Is that a reason not to invest heavily in nuclear? Absolutely not. The fact is,10 years is a blink of an eye, especially for massive markets (like nuclear energy) and companies with incredibly deep moats (like FANCO). At the same time skepticism is not only healthy, it’s mandatory. Journalists, investors, legislators, and the public must dig deep into the technologies being touted and the backgrounds of the people doing the touting.
