🚨‼️ In a leaked letter dated 23 April, the Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana formally declared Johannesburg to be in severe financial distress. In the letter, he ordered the Mayor to explain how the massive SAMWU R10 billion wage deal will be paid for. This is the same wage deal that the DA fought against and took to court.

This morning, I visited Hermanus Harbour in the Western Cape, where I was joined by Western Cape Minister of Infrastructure, Tertuis Simmers, Executive Mayor of the Overberg District Municipality, Sakkie Franken, and the Executive Mayor of the Overstrand Municipality, Archie Klaas, to engage with stakeholders and assess how we can unlock the full potential of this strategic asset ⚓️ With significant infrastructure already in place, the focus now is clear: fixing underutilised properties, attracting investment, and turning the harbour into a thriving economic hub for the community. Through the Small Harbours Programme, we are moving from passive ownership to active management: ensuring these assets drive jobs, growth, and opportunity. Infrastructure must work. After John Steenhuisen’s announcement yesterday, I have been approached by many party members to stand for the position of Federal Leader. The DA’s internal campaign rules stipulate that public campaigning may only begin when the nomination period opens. That will happen later this month, which is when I will announce my intentions. Whatever is decided, I will remain committed to stand for a second term as the Mayor of Cape Town. It is the DA’s biggest government and our strongest platform as we head into the local elections. If I do stand for election as DA Leader, I would welcome a robust and principled process focused on competing ideas for the future of our party and our country. We have many excellent leaders, and an open exchange of ideas can only strengthen us. Thank you to all those who have reached out to me. It is an honour to be considered, and whatever the outcome, our focus must remain on serving every South African and building a country of hope. 🇿🇦

John Steenhuisen is a good man who led the DA to its greatest-ever heights and made South Africa a better country. In 2019, he inherited a party reading its own obituary, in a country in rapid decline. In 2026, he hands over a party that co-governs a country firmly on the up. John Steenhuisen had the courage and vision to take, and land, his Moonshot of leading the DA into national government when very few people believed it could be done. A leader who empowered rather than feared talent with the best political instincts I have ever seen, the full story of how John reformed the DA into a more constructive, collaborative party building South Africa up, is yet to be told. But first: I look forward to continue working with Minister Steenhuisen in Cabinet to make sure that the worst outbreak of FMD in our country’s history, is also the last 💙🇿🇦
