The Port of Lamu is geared up for a spike in vessel calls in the coming days, a development that is expected to inject fresh momentum into regional trade and strengthen the Port’s position as a leading transshipment hub in the region. Speaking at a media briefing at the Port of Lamu, KPA Managing Director Capt. William Ruto said early indicators already point to growing cargo volumes shipped through the Port. He added that major shipping lines have begun showing confidence in the second commercial port’s growing capacity. The MD said there is a steady rise in vessel traffic particularly car carriers choosing Lamu as their preferred destination. He disclosed that the Port expected another car carrier expected to discharge 5,000 motor vehicle units next week, a development he described as a strong signal of strengthened commercial activities and growing confidence among shippers. Capt. Ruto who presided over the reception of MV Grande Florida Palermo on her maiden call at Port of Lamu reaffirmed the Port of Lamu’s rising stature and its growing attractiveness to global shipping operators. Operated by Grimaldi Lines, the ship docked at the Port yesterday laden with 3,800 motor vehicle units and assorted spare parts. This is the second car carrier to call at the port a week after her sister vessel MV Grande Auckland discharged 469 motorcar units. The Port has recorded 74 vessels this year between January to date. In terms of performance, the Port posted an impressive total cargo throughput of 799,161 metric tons last year compared to 74,380 metric tons which was recorded in 2024 mainly driven by containerized cargo. With more shipping lines introducing regular service to Lamu, this is a promise of more cargo volumes through the port in subsequent years. @TransportKE @mohamed_daghar @SDoT_Kenya @davis_chirchir
