The real reason these platforms died wasn’t so much for economic reasons, but for cultural reasons—the crypto scene couldn’t persuade the rest of the world to join a ‘movement’ that it didn’t relate to. More than anything, it was an art problem—the so-called ‘blue chips’ of cryptoart were neither admired or liked by rest of the world, whether artists, curators or collectors. And to this day, and perhaps more than ever with its declining numbers, it remains a provincial scene on X. The real key to adoption is moving beyond X and a crypto culture that thinks the be all and end all of digital art is a crypto punk. Until then, it’ll continue as it has.
