Today is the first day I am officially the breadwinner of my family — a term historically used by men to justify earning more than women for the same job. I’m going to beg, steal or borrow to get a job. I may even use my own body as bait on a separate account @forgotdali since I can’t keep using OONA’s (body). Until 31 March, that other account will document what I am absolutely certain will be my smashing success. This one remains my main work account. The other becomes the WGMI log. Wish me luck. Or send money.

Chapter 1. A woman (age undisclosed, married, 2 kids) who works in the arts as a writer learns she is going to earn at the level of a senior IT engineer. How exactly is she supposed to get there? Hard work? Connections? Strategic positioning? Manipulation? Fraud? Sleeping with someone useful? This will unfold in real time as a diary, with a lot of numbers, including income targets and whether they are met. Onwards.

Recently, in a tweet about generative art, @fellowshiptrust referenced Matthew Schmidt’s definition of the field as “a system with relatively simple rules that gives rise to complexity through emergence,” pointing to the difference between emergence and randomness. Randomness produces variation; emergence produces structure. The complexity we observe is not arbitrary but the result of constraints unfolding over time. A useful example of this distinction can be found in Dragons, a long-form generative series by @williamapan A thread 🧵👇
