@paddycosgrave Irish energy prices have always been among the highest in the EU as we have a small very thinly distributed grid compared to the economies of scale in Europe. This claim we were the second cheapest is complete nonsense

“Irish energy prices highest in EU” - they used to be the 2nd cheapest. So what happened? FFG created a largely private sector quasi-monopoly in energy, said quasi-monopoly - energy companies - were by design free to gouge consumers, while media who receive lots of advertising 💰 from several of these energy companies seldom if ever discuss the issue of how exactly the market has been rigged against consumers. Domestic and international crony insiders bribed various FFG politicians over the decades to privatise most of our energy market in a manner that allowed those super-rich crony insiders to rig the market and then print billions in profit over the decades, at the detriment of almost everyone. Here’s a November 2025 economic report by the Nevin Economic Research Institute: “We see in 1980, that electricity prices for this representative consumption band, notwithstanding data gaps, were among the cheapest in the EU15 comparator group. In 1980, only Greek prices were lower than those seen in Ireland” Today, energy costs are the highest in the EU. All that’s happened over time is a bunch of very rich insiders have captured billions in profit to the detriment of consumers and the economy more broadly. To do so they worked with FFG politicians to create a “legally” rigged market. You’ll find this pattern of FFG politicians working with rich cronies to rig other markets - like insurance and health. While the rich insiders and politicians make out like bandits, everyone else gets screwed. And if you protest about being screwed, you’ll be smeared by the media, beaten by the Gardai and called all manner of things. This is how Ireland works. Until that is people realise they have the collective power to change it and turf these FFG cronies and their rich pals out of power for good.

It says much about the Irish far right movement that they spent all week trying to *prevent* their fellow citizens getting to work+ hospital appointments while blockading fuel depots to deprive people of fuel. There’s a reason Irish people keep rejecting them at the ballot box.

@gavpepper85 Every member of that government should resign today. They have transformed Ireland into a country where hard-working men are attacked by state enforcers for protesting a cost of living crisis while 3rd world migrants stroll in and get everything handed to them for free.

One thing I've not heard anyone answer is, beyond the €250mn reduction in fuel taxes already in effect (costing the exchequer €4mn a day) where the shortfall should be made up from if we are to cut taxes substantially further? Spending on schools, hospitals, road maintenance?

We accept the right of people to protest but this is not a fair protest. Denying people the right to fuel and to clean water. These are essentials. Warnings to pregnant women to go much earlier to health appointments because of the blockade is not fair.

@rtenews He could have brought to protest to a halt by having a conversation with the Irish people. Instead he deployed the army against the people he is elected by. He created this mess, not the protesters.

Ireland is a democracy in which people have the right to peaceful protest. These protests have gone too far. Critical infrastructure cannot be held to ransom. This is a democratic country and the elected Government continues to engage with representative organisations.

Don’t fall for the spin. BAM are not the bad guys. They’re a business responsible to shareholders, out to make a profit. Their model may be distasteful, even immoral, but they’re only taking advantage of public service workers who can’t compete against the private sector in the boardroom, a court room or a building site. Simon Harris signed the contracts without a design because he wanted the big headline. That’s it. Everything after that was a snowball.
Seán Mc@SeanDubIreland

Why? If I call Treyvauds and ask for a steak, chips and mushroom meal for 100 people you’ll do me a price all inclusive, probably with a discount. If I call and say I want to bring a group and don’t know how many, or what food they want, you’ll give me a P/P charge based on your menu. It’ll be much more expensive because of my lack of organisation and planning. If you want to build an extension, you can get either a price, or a rate for labour + materials. You go to an architect, have the extension drawn up, the materials specified and you go to tender. Three builders tell you that’ll be 1. €15,000, 2. €20,000 and 3. €25,000. You go with the cheapest. On the first day, you tell him you’ve changed your mind. You ditch the plans and say you want a different design, but you don’t know what it is. You do this every day and at every stage. He has no choice but to charge you a day rate for every man working on site, plus the costs of every material. And an extra charge for undoing the work he keeps doing that you decide to change after he’s started. That’s the BAM model, go in cheap, with expensive rates that are known up front and in the contracts. ABSOLUTELY NO GOVERNMENT CONTRACT SHIULD GO TO TENDER WITHOUT A FULLY COORDINATED BIM MODEL. They told BAM to build a hospital without a design. BAM were pouring concrete floors without knowing where pipes and other services were going, and had to go back and drill them afterwards. If the customer who ordered 100 steaks off you and changed it after the steak were cooked to 20 Chicken, 30 fish, 40 Vegetarian and 10 Lamb get the original price, or would you look for the cost of the 100 wasted steaks, plus the 100 new meals, plus an additional prep fee?
