New digital billboards are going up across North Carolina to expand the ongoing search for two escaped inmates to advertise a combined reward of up to $40,000 for information leading to their arrests. Michael Lewis Miles Jr. and Lishawn Knott are both considered armed and dangerous. Miles and Knott were in the Vance County Detention Center being held for multiple state drug trafficking and gun related charges when they escaped on June 3, 2026, at approximately 2:00 p.m. The Vance County Sheriff's Office, the FBI, the SBI, the Henderson Police Department and other law enforcement partners are developing and following leads, collecting and exploiting surveillance video, interviewing witnesses, associates, family members of the escapees, and conducting sophisticated court authorized investigative techniques to capture them. Miles is 33 years old, 6’0”, approximately 180 lbs., with black and brown eyes and a prominent neck tattoo. Knott is 21 years old, 5' 11", approximately 160 lbs., with black hair and brown eyes with numerous face tattoos including a large cross on his forehead. We ask home and business owners to lock your vehicles, close your garage doors, and lock up your sheds. If you see Miles and Knott, do not approach them, call 911 or the Henderson-Vance Crime Stoppers at 252-492-1925. We appreciate assistance from the North Carolina Outdoor Advertising Association for donating available digital billboard space.

The FBI is offering a reward up to $50,000 for information to locate and capture Michael Timothy Puckett. This adds to the $10,000 already being offered by the U.S. Marshals Service for a combined reward up to $60,000. FBI Richmond is assisting the Carroll County Sheriff's Office, U.S. Marshals, the Virginia State Police, and multiple local and state agencies in a manhunt for Puckett, who is facing an Aggravated Murder charge in Virginia.  Carroll County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a welfare check at Puckett's home on Fancy Gap Highway on Friday at approximately 9:30 p.m. When they arrived and made contact, authorities said Puckett opened fire, shooting both deputies, killing one deputy and injuring the second. He then fled the scene. We are asking the public to check surveillance video or trail/hunting camera images to assist in real-time tracking of the fugitive. We also ask home and business owners to lock your vehicles, close your garage doors, lock up your sheds and do not leave anything outside Puckett could use to assist him to elude capture. Call 911 if you see Puckett.

#OTD 90 years ago, former FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover personally arrested notorious gangster Alvin Karpis, aka "Public Enemy Number One." Karpis led a life of crime, but as the brains of the Barker/Karpis Gang, he remained elusive to law enforcement until April 1936, when word came that "Old Creepy" was in New Orleans. Hoover flew overnight to join the raid team, and they sketched out an arrest plan on a chalkboard. Once in custody, Hoover escorted Karpis to Minnesota to face kidnapping charges.
