What are the effects of large human-capital shocks on innovation? In a new paper, we study how WWI military deaths across British communities affected local invention over the next decades. We find that places that lost more young men became persistently less innovative. (🧵1/11)

@cepr_org @UniBergamo In a RDD setting we show that early adoption of compulsory schooling in 1877 Italy had a significant impact on innovation and industrialization through an increase in human capital. Policy implication: earlier adoption and enforcement of CSL can affect economic growth patterns.

Yep. People are dunking on this but he's absolutely right. The mixed economy is the best system of human economic organization ever invented, and Korea and Germany are about as clean a demonstration of that fact as we're ever going to get.
Elon Musk@elonmusk

Korea and Germany are two examples of random lines being drawn and one side going all government (full communism) and the other side going only half government (socialist, aka half communism and half capitalism)

My take on that: as for the Great Recession we learned a lot from the Great Depression, for a deeper understanding of the current fertility decline we should learn more from research on the historical demographic transition.
Guillaume Blanc@gguillaumeblanc

Fantastic article about how economic and cultural factors shape (together) fertility: "If the goal is to increase fertility, neither cultural nor economic solutions are likely to work in isolation" @stephmurrayyyy @TheAtlantic A million times yes! theatlantic.com/family/archive…

I don't know how it happened, but our paper on "Lobbying for Industrialization" was invited for resubmission at Econometrica! Granted, it's a Reject and Resubmit. And there are loads of work to do. But I'm so happy. Time for a little celebration with my friend and amazing coauthor Dmitriy Veselov! This paper had a first WP back in 2016!! Only theory back then. We even abandoned the project at some point. But I always thought there was more to it. Guess we aren't the only ones thinking so now 🙏
