I think this is just another form of "be good in life in order to be rewarded with paradise", in this case paradise would be the "the real world". Although you may not be observed always, surely your actions are being recorded somehow in order to assure that you are worthy of the real world.
The simulators are just the classic god in a more "technological" form. In the end, acts of goodness become just a selfish way to gain tickets to paradise.
