Hey @feedme, thks for your amazing work! I've desperately waited for a specific track you used 5 years ago in YTV "Feed Me | Room Service Festival (FullSet)". Could you Save Me from madness? If you have any info I would be awesome! Link with timing : youtu.be/K-FNq0t5Xqw?t=…

@SamsungUK Top of range freezer dead within 3 years. Extended warranty refused as I apparently didn’t hit the right link - sat in kitchen for 6 weeks, official repair apparently regassed and marked as fixed - still failing. How is this a fit for purpose product?

@TalonRahl_exe @TauCetiGG @4nt1r34l …and not necessarily wrong, we’re all compiled objects of influence after all. I guess in this case to me, the ‘feel’ of how these elements stack seem off, and it seems quite tough to see Marathon as worthy of being considered its own thing. PS you’re welcome
English

@TalonRahl_exe @TauCetiGG @4nt1r34l You could well be right, and might explain the artefacty look of some text. Ultimately influence, style, artistic intent are all fluid and often a ‘feel’ thing. On a personal level I’ve had instances where I can tell someone used my work as reference - but that’s often flattering
English

Here’s a clearer comparison between the textures extracted from Marathon’s game files (top and left) and the original artwork by @4nt1r34l.

English

@TalonRahl_exe @TauCetiGG @4nt1r34l I think your response is a demonstration of how difficult it is to police ‘style’, but in this instance it comes off a bit apologist to me when there’s now copy pasted assets in-game, and a glaring omission from the art director to name @4nt1r34l among his influences
English

I do understand that notion fully.
Though the point is not only related to TDR.
That was just an example.
I think that Marathon is a culmination of contemporary high fidelity art, old school 90s japanase art, Bungies own "marathon" world art (i.e marathon ship and enemies etc), and then a blend of other things in other games they have made. Among other things.
I mean theyve cited stuff like Nike shoes and other stuff for their characters. All inspiration.
I just think its highly derivative to say their "entire" art direction comes from some small (and very good) artist lol.
English

Again, TDR worked hand in hand with Psygnosis which is why it worked so well, it’s well detailed in the volume book and it’s interesting read how TDR influenced / steered away from aspects of the game with great results

A lot of you have already identified many of our visual influences, Mirrors Edge, Aeon Flux, Ghost in the Shell, Otomo, Koji Morimoto, The Designers Republic, Chris Cunningham, are all definitely in our "stew" of inspiration.
English

When Death Stranding started getting teased I thought ‘sick, clothing has a real @erlsn vibe’ and guess what: not only was it because he was involved, he is also literally IN THE GAME
Joseph Cross@josephacross
OG Marathon, and Wipeout (to name few) are full of interesting visual qualities and ideas, just as much as next/current gen games like Death Stranding, God of War, and The Last of US are.
English

@PaulTassi It has the feel of ‘we heard you like sportswear so we covered the world in Nike ticks’ - it doesn’t make for a 3D environment that reads as habitable, relatable or somewhere you want to keep coming back to. I don’t think the original artist would’ve applied their work this way
English

@PaulTassi The other issue with the aesthetic to me is that it misunderstands its purpose - futurism supplement environments in the way industrial designation does in say haulage or military application - it doesn’t mean that every single surface needs to be a neon nightmare
English

@grave_keepr @4nt1r34l You can see where Adobe Illustrator live-trace only partially picked out the text in the box and has the typical artefacts from doing so
English

I think the problem here is that the entire games aesthetic is built on the @4nt1r34l aesthetic. Saying a ‘former employee’ is responsible isn’t vindicating when the products entire look now appears collective plagiarism. It would be impossible to un-4nt1r34l the game.
Marathon Development Team@MarathonDevTeam
We immediately investigated a concern regarding unauthorized use of artist decals in Marathon and confirmed that a former Bungie artist included these in a texture sheet that was ultimately used in-game.
English

@Uncle_Skeleton @4nt1r34l Looks like they have form for compensating artists after-the-fact though, but yeah not good to see. The parallel issue Marathon has got is that the gameplay is just really tiring to look at, in a game format that requires a lot of repeat dives in
English

If @4nt1r34l had worked on the game, I’d wager you’d find their aesthetic on the menus and iconography rather than plastering an almost cel-shared garish colour swatch on every surface, splatoon style. Either way I don’t see how bungie can hold any integrity over this now
