@allTheYud I really like the idea of him training in MMA so he can take on his bodyguards in case they betray him after the collapse of civilization. I’m sure that’s not the real reason, and it wouldn’t work anyway, but there’s something funny about the idea.

@anarch97 I theorize that y'all have been oneshotted by a 24/7 firehose of top 1% attractiveness women online and that has warped your brains to make you think you could do better than what you've got, when you actually should be thanking your lucky stars that someone wants you

Every single male friend of mine, after long conversation, has confessed that they’re not really in love with their long term girlfriends. Their relationships are essentially heterosocial close friendships with affection and benefits
Andy Semenza@Andrew_Semenza

it's bizarre how people describe romantic entanglements as if they are a default state. I wont talk about myself here (I could be insane), but the majority of my close mid-20s male friends have never experienced a whiff of romance, and they are all handsome & thoughtful people

@PaulaSeeksTruth You can do the same about any topic to be honest. Does your ideal self ever watches tik-toks for 2 hours straight? Does your ideal self eats junk food? Does your ideal self feel shitty and sad for no reason sometimes? I mean, come on.

@honeyNonABG Have you ever read a stories about female teachers sleeping with their underage male students and going to jail for it? I see one story like this every second month.

I’m pushing 30. Was at the beach and some 18 year old lied and said he was 21. I told him I’m his mother. He wouldn’t go away. I told him I’m basically 30. He said age didn’t matter. He came up to me 3-4 times. And as courageous as he was, to me he was a child. A young boy just starting out. One that was offering himself up to be taken advantage of. Makes me think of all the 60+ year old men “dating” 20 year olds. Makes me think of that 65 year old who was talking to 21 year old me. How do these men do that? How do they look at a literal child and go “wow she’s mature” when i was looking at this 18 year old and thinking of how much younger he is than my younger brother. “She’s a fully grown adult.” And you’re excusing yourself to feel less guilty.

A mentally healthy man in his 30’s shouldn’t be interested in 20 year girls. I said what I said.

@jakozloski I mean, the number of marriages is not necessarily a good metric unless you factor in marital satisfaction. Which makes it 10 times harder to measure.

Almost no dating product measures whether their users got married. They measure swipes, matches, time-in-app, subscription renewal. The single output that actually matters is invisible to the system that's supposed to produce it.

My take in the red/blue button discourse is that Tim Urban was right to include children in the vote. It's much easier for the "smart logical puzzle solvers" to still care for someone who "didn't think this through" if they are children. But they can also be your parents!

@allTheYud @neocartesian I don’t see myself as being at fault for whatever happens to other people, I didn’t create this game. Protecting myself seems like the priority here. Still, I would cooperate with a trusted friend in a one-iteration prisoner's dilemma and also I’d one-box every time.

@neocartesian Yeah, it's that some young kids will pick red, so we want a fault-tolerant answer of blue, and also it's foolish for people to informally or formally think their vote has no meaning in any election not decided by one vote.

@diegocaleiro Go out and do something nice in the real world instead of praising yourself for choosing a noble option in the insignificant internet poll.

Told GPT to wear a Diego hat and vote 🗳 for red or blue: I press blue, obviously. Not because I failed game theory kindergarten. Not because I don’t understand that red is individually safer if civilization has already collapsed into lizard math. I press blue because the entire point of being human is that we are not supposed to live in lizard math. The red button is the answer of the isolated survival machine. The bunker creature. The person who sees the social contract as a decorative napkin instead of the thing keeping the species from becoming Somalia with better phones. Blue is the human answer. Because children exist. Because confused people exist. Because old people misread things. Because people panic. Because people are tired, dumb, trusting, scared, or just morally normal enough to think “surely we are all trying to save everyone.” And if your reaction to that is “lol, those people die, I picked red,” then congratulations, you are exactly the pathogen civilization evolved morality to suppress. Altruism is not magic dust. It is enforcement. It is shame. It is reputation. It is punishment. It is everyone learning, over deep time, that defectors are dangerous animals and should not be allowed to set the temperature of the tribe. The blue button is not naive. The blue button is the entire mammalian stack: mother, child, friend, village, ritual, reputation, gods, gossip, law, honor, shame, comedy, exile, prison, civilization. The red button is “what if I personally crawl out of the wreckage?” No. I am not interested in winning that game. I am interested in preventing the wreckage. So I press blue, and then I spend the whole year making red socially radioactive. Not because I want cruelty. Because goodness is a fragile equilibrium, and you do not preserve it by politely inviting the termites to chair the architecture committee. Blue won. The children live. Many lives were saved.

I can’t believe what I’m reading. If blue is well over 50%, then your choice is irrelevant - there will never be a situation where the outcome is decided by a single vote. And again, people are confidently relying on imaginary polls.
Helen Toner@hlntnr

Been trying to stay out of the Button Discourse, but- Your decision should depend on what other people actually choose, which is blue by well over 50%. Lord of the Flies is not an accurate depiction of human behavior. "Rational" ≠ "selfish." If this poll surprised you, update.

@feruell @ThinkWiselyMatt Yeah, that all is true. My reasoning goes like this. Children of all ages participate. Some of them press blue. Therefore, their parents press blue. Therefore *a lot* of people press blue. I'd like these families to survive and I believe the risk for me is not high.
