365 celluloid people I love. Day 107. Denzel Washington. He's become the John Wayne of modern-day movies: I’ll watch anything he’s in, good or bad, because he's there.

LUISE RAINER was the first actor or actress to win multiple acting Oscars, the first to win back to back Oscars and, passing away at the grand age of 104, the longest-living Oscar winner of them all.

Neil Jordan’s THE CRYING GAME (1992) • Entering the Criterion Collection in July! criterion.com/films/33812-th… Jordan’s emotionally stunning international sensation overcame the barriers between independent and mainstream cinema to become one of the defining films of the 1990s.

@CineGiant A film I really disliked. Changing the relationship to rival businesses (from rival coworkers in original) really soured the story (especially when one is an indie store devouring corporation). Ryan, Hanks, cast are all fine but I can’t let go of the destruction of Ryan’s store.

You’ve Got Mail (98): As easy as Meg Ryan’s neutral separates, but still packs an emotional punch. Ryan does some of her best work, and it’s fun to see Hanks slightly snarkier. Ephron’s reliance on cute and quirky gets a bit much, but the writing is acerbic enough to elevate. B+

#otd in 1932 the short film "The Music Box" is released, starring Laurel & Hardy, their only film to win an Academy Award (for Best Live Action Short Film) which is a shame because they were a brilliant team. What’s your favorite film of theirs? Mine? The Music Box & Way Out West

Martin Ritt's HUD (1963) • Entering the Criterion Collection in July! criterion.com/films/30203-hud A family’s downfall becomes a stark elegy for the ideals of the American frontier in this quietly subversive reimagining of western myths.

Does anyone remember the weird past-life thriller Dead Again (1991) Robin Williams shows up uncredited as a disgraced psychiatrist; he didn’t want anyone expecting a comedy. He only has three scenes, and he’s absolutely electric. Oh, and happy birthday, Emma Thompson

@HistoryBoomer I’m lousy at keeping up with trends but I think both Rent & Hamilton went from celebratory progressive masterpieces (with Pulitzers) to cringe problematic trash during the woke revolution.

Woke is a cultural obsession with identity that favors some identities over others (the ones that are supposedly more oppressed). You were listening to a song about someone counting the minutes in a year and measuring them in love. Valuing love is not "woke bullshit."
Chase Geiser@realchasegeiser

I pay 1,000 dollars a month to send my daughter to catholic school to protect her from woke bullshit. I just went to her first recital where the kids are singing the theme song from the musical Rent, about how many minutes are left in a year in the context of being diagnosed with aids. What the actual fuck.
