Responding to a question by @AEbrashi what’s your advice to learn stock assessment Below is a list I put together based on my personal experience. Some might be unexpected, but they are important. I am sure others can provide some additional advice.

We got a species I haven’t collected before on the @Scripps_Ocean RVSproul! Lepidopus fitchi, Pacific Scabbardfish. A benthopelagic species found from 150-500 m. Caught in a 340 m bottom trawl off SD conducted for the undergrad Methods in Biological Oceanography class!

Well, I found the last 120 copies of Samuel Garman’s 1913 shark book ‘Plagiostomia’. The reprint run was 1000 copies and in grad school these boxes were my furniture. I wish I had done his deep sea fishes book as well.

For those that don’t know, I did my dissertation analyzing the cycle of graduate student that occurred at @UCSanDiego led by workers of @uaw2865 between 2012 and 2017. Their struggle is critical for a number reasons, but especially the following:

@jillbrooks85 @WhySharksMatter I agree that there is plenty of nuance to discuss here, but I think it is important to add that Discovery does not require their experts to be those that receive income for their work.

@WhySharksMatter Yeh, a separate discussion to shark week for sure, but I think it will be worth exploring the women proportion of professional shark scientists that receive an income for their work. And when you say related fields, is that just fisheries?

Absolutely not defending shark week’s lack of diversity here, I have my own experiences there, but I’m intrigued by the 60% stat @WhySharksMatter - does this include women paying to do shark science, I.e., students?
