Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus
.@WHO expresses deep concern about the implications of the United States government’s immediate funding pause for #HIV programmes in low- and middle-income countries. These programmes provide access to life-saving HIV therapy to more than 30 million people worldwide. This funding halt can put people living with HIV at immediate increased risk of illness and death and undermine efforts to prevent transmission in communities and countries. Such measures, if prolonged, could lead to rises in new infections and deaths, reversing decades of progress and potentially taking the world back to the 1980s and 1990s when millions died of HIV every year globally, including many in the USA. We call on the US government to enable additional exemptions to ensure the delivery of lifesaving HIV treatment and care: bit.ly/42yxxIz

Woman’s Hour travels to Tuam, Ireland ahead of preliminary excavations of a former mother & baby home site. In 2014, it was found that up to 796 babies who died there from 1925-1961 were buried in a disused ‘sewage tank’. @BBCNuala speaks to those at the heart of this story ⬇️

1 Thread on #mpox which is in the news again since a returning traveller was diagnosed in Sweden with a new more dangerous strain which reached Europe for the first time. In the 2022-23 global outbreak I was clinical advisor to @WHOEurope Here’s what I think you need to know.

I can predict there will be calls to restrict access to crossbows. Diverting the conversation from the real and urgent problem - the man who used the crossbow and male violence against women. Don’t be distracted!

A detailed, 5-year longitudinal study looks closely at reforms meant to encourage walking & biking in London. Health benefits outweighed costs by 10 to 1. For the most intensive interventions -- Low Traffic Neighborhoods -- it was 50:1 or even *200:1*. sciencedirect.com/science/articl…
