Found out NBA THE RUN will be releasing on June 9th with no single player content. Fully get it - it's a small dev team and they're making a ton of awesome changes. But that unfortunately means I'm out on it. Hope some stuff comes post launch - excited to watch from afar!

Exclusive licensing means your one sports game needs to serve several different audiences that have different, incompatible ideas on what the “real” sport is, when competition would have lowered that pressure entirely

@iTalkMyShit24_7 @joonlee @Kofie With MLB, 2K had third party rights with no flagship baseball game that was actually good, but the terms of the deal were more on building a portfolio of games vs just one game. It’s why The Bigs/Power Pros and other baseball games were published by 2K throughout the deal.

That’s why I care about current NIL likeness. — Sidenote: What if I could start my Dynasty at week 5 in the current CFB season and branch into a new timeline where I avoided disaster? 😭 🐊 Or what if I want to start a new Dynasty come playoff time but instead of starting back at week 1 and trying to sim to our exact reality, I just get to start from where we are in the season with the current results/records/rankings/stats…. A review can fairly judge what the game is trying to be, but the game itself is trying to be everything: sim, comp, Franchise, MUT, casual couch football, career fantasy, and official NFL presentation. That’s the moving goalpost.

@ByDanielOwens @ThatSportsGamer Exactly. The product can be reviewed fairly on its own terms, but exclusivity changes the weight of those terms. If one game is the only official sim then “what it’s trying to be” is shaped by every audience it has to absorb.

Covering sports gaming has made me appreciate the balance between being a fan, being critical and being fair. My goal is simple: honest coverage, better conversations, and more attention on the modes and communities that make sports games matter.
