Yesterday was a big day for me. I sold the family business my dad started when I was a teenager. It's a mix of sadness and relief. Long story short - 2 years ago this month, I had to call an ambulance because I found my dad barely alive. He basically spent the next 6 months in the hospital before passing away. He owned a small pest control company that employed 3 people. Since he was not married and I'm an only child, I found myself in the position of trying to work the job I was in at the time, trying to make sure his employees were being paid, keeping his business afloat, handling his personal finances, & spending a few days each week in Mississippi visiting my dad. All while trying to be a good husband and dad at home. Plus, I knew absolutely nothing about pest control. It was a mess. By the time he passed away, there had been about 8 months without anybody effectively in charge of the business. We had lost a fair amount of customers by that point. All this became my focus. I couldn't let it simply dissolve. There were big tax issues, regulatory issues, employee issues, etc, & I was clueless on how to handle most of it. Given the loss of customers & back taxes that needed to be paid, I haven't taken a salary this entire time so that I could put any profit back into the business. I created an income on the side by trading in the stock market. This had always been a hobby but became much more than that. Can't tell you how thankful I am for this skill. Now, 2 years later, the company is healthy enough to sell without feeling like I'm giving it away. I'm sad to sell it because Clark Exterminators is a big part of who my dad was. I saw it take us from being broke as a kid to him being able to buy us a house, pay for my college, & bless us in many ways throughout the years. However, it's a relief to have the weight lifted of fighting for the company's survival. So, what's next for me? No clue  🤣
