@scholliski ive lived in a tri state area my entire life and it didnt hit me until leaving it for college that most other ppl only ever hear it in media like phineas and ferb bc all my friends stopped me and started laughing when i unironically said "tri-state area" in conversation

@browhnii exactly my point... ppl love to be snarky and judge others for pronouncing it wrong when they're not even aware they're technically also pronouncing it wrong

@SCOOPYBANOOPI unless you're pronouncing it [tomodatɕi] without making the o's diphthongs and with ur point of articulation for the /ch/ alveo-palatal (which you probably aren't) you're technically not correct either 🤷‍♀️ loan words are always going to be pronounced differently to conform to the

@Ursaweinhaus @SCOOPYBANOOPI my point is the english /o/ and the japanese /o/ are not the same. in english o can be pronounced [oʊ] or [a] or [ʌ] or [ə] or whatever but in japanese it's just [o] which isnt really a thing in english. so calling ppl out for saying [a] and not [oʊ] doesnt rly make sense

@firstviolinn @SCOOPYBANOOPI I mean ɕ is not a phoneme that is present in the English language and most wouldn't be able to make it without training most wouldn't even be able to tell the difference. I o is a common phoneme in English so there's really no excuse for not pronouncing it that way

@twumblunni @SCOOPYBANOOPI ykw fair point. ig my main gripe is when ppl judge others for saying loan words "wrong" which ive been seeing a lot on here with japanese words

@firstviolinn @SCOOPYBANOOPI I think it's kinda silly to pull up facts about real life loanwords that developed naturally and apply it to a videogame franchise that has a clear canon indicator of how to say it in every language it's been translated to.

@yaoi_pyrholidon @SCOOPYBANOOPI yes you're right but judging ppl for not pronouncing a foreign loan word correctly is just annoying when technically no one pronounces it right bc its a loan word

@waywoodceo yeah i also find linguistics differences fun i was mostly just annoyed seeing a million tweets being like "english speakers cant pronounce japanese words" like yeah... but ur tweet was more pointing out the fact that japanese is phonetically consistent and not judging ppl

@waywoodceo yeah youre right 😭 theres definitely a spectrum from "more correct" to "less correct" but if youre are technically not completely right why r u making fun of ppl are slightly less right. u can't expect everyone to understand how every language's pronunciation rules work

@firstviolinn though i cant blame them. in english the pronunciation of letters in words depends on the position of the stars in the sky and level of intoxication of whoever decided certain word's spelling

@Shubaxplosion @SCOOPYBANOOPI yes im not disagreeing with you there. but my point is that it's annoying when ppl are snarky about others pronouncing loan words "wrong." loan words are always pronounced "wrong" and not everyone speaks japanese. as long as the meaning gets across thats what matters

@firstviolinn @SCOOPYBANOOPI Imagine if people said “pezza” instead of pizza. Neither is exactly how Italians say it but one is clearly closer and if you say “pezza”, you’re not even saying it right in English

@Shubaxplosion @SCOOPYBANOOPI and i can guarantee you most english speakers who dont know japanese would not understand what a japanese person means by "makudonarudo." it's incredibly different and that's fine! just like how the english pronunciation of tsunami or tokyo is different. its how loan words work

@firstviolinn @SCOOPYBANOOPI See but that’s still as close you can get to saying McDonald’s in JP. I can still recognize what it’s supposed to be. Imagine if instead they said “Pokudonarudo” like that’s an entirely new sound!

@Shubaxplosion @SCOOPYBANOOPI this is coming from a linguistics major who is studying multiple languages including japanese at a college level. i used to be one of those snarky ppl who insisted on pronouncing foreign words "right" too but now i know why loan words pronunciations get changed and that every
