“Bullfighting enthusiasts may bristle at this. The leading English-language chronicler, Alexander Fiske-Harrison, does not consider bullfighting a sport, as ‘no-one keeps score and there is no way for anyone or anything to win’. He prefers to think of it as a category of performance art, whose success is determined by ‘how much the audience has been emotionally moved’.” Indeed I do not think bullfighting is a sport, nor, in Spain, does anyone else, be they for OR against the spectacle. spectator.com/article/the-al…

Chapter one of my forthcoming book on wolves, dogs and humans is in the bag with my favourite collaborator, and oldest and most talented friend, Camille. As reported on in New York Magazine (online here.) fiske-harrison.com/2025/09/23/wol…

I crash an interview in New York magazine: “I excuse myself to use the restroom. When I return, Winters is deep in conversation with the man sitting next to us: a British author named Alexander Fiske-Harrison, who is working on a book about wolves. On the walk up, we had started talking about relationships. There were a couple of times that Winters had come close to settling down, but it had never happened. It was no one’s fault, he said. He supposed it was never too late to have children, but he didn’t really want to be a 70-year-old dude with a little kid. Now, a fuller story emerges. One of Winters’s exes had remained in his life, but they’d had a falling-out. He despaired of ever seeing her again. Outside the bar, Alexander presses him: “Did you do the full back-down? There are two ways to apologize. One way is, ‘I’m really sorry if what I did offended you.’ And the other way is, ‘I’m very sorry.’” Among the men around him, opinions vary on what Winters should do. Alexander shares his own tale of romantic turmoil. Then for the next 15 minutes or so, Winters and I go silent as he entertains us with accounts of interviewing bullfighters in Spain.” With thanks to Dean and Nate.

@RhonddaBryant A valid point Chris although there is a valid counter that to have an effect this route is more likely to lead to a result.

This is the direct opposite of patriotism. If he has a point to make, surely he should make it in the parliament to which he has been elected?

Some writing I did to help a friend. For anyone who has a daughter who loves horses… “Aesop for Horses: The First Girl and the First Horse Once, long ago, before fences or roads, there was a horse who saw the world with eyes so wide he could see almost everything. He saw the wolf before it leapt, the eagle before it swooped, the storm before it broke. But because he saw so much, he was afraid. Every shadow was a danger. And there was a girl, who was small, and had no claws or sharp teeth. But she was not afraid. She saw the horse’s dark eyes and stepped closer. “If you will not run from me,” she said, “I will not run from you.” The horse stamped and snorted and flicked his head, but he did not run. The girl laid her hand on his neck. “You are stronger than I will ever be,” she whispered. “But I can watch for you, and you can carry me, and we will keep one another safe.” And so it was: the first horse gave his trust, and the first girl gave her courage. The world still had cruelty in it, there were still wolves—but now, when the wolves came, the girl and the horse were not alone and could run faster than any pack. And ever since, horses have remembered that promise in their dark eyes, and girls have remembered it in their hearts.” Photo by Nicolás Haro

@Seanchuckle You are aware that you, a man, are telling women what women are? Why don't you put on black face and turn to those of African origin?

@Seanchuckle I have sympathy: you have a voice, and I understand acting, I studied at Stella Adler when Marlon Brando was chairman. However, I also studied biology at Oxford as an undergrad, history of science at LSE as a postgrad, and am currently working in nueroscience at KCL. There is no new science on this subject, NONE, male and female are a mammalian dichotomoy, and no one serious says otherwise. So, why are you opining young actor? By what right do you speak without script? Are you saying all a woman is is a man with bits cut off and some serum hormonal alteration? They are defined by a hole? Somewhere to put something in, even if fruitlessly? What a disgustingly, degradingly, teenage male point of view... You see, among serious people, we don't let ideologues, actors, or even surgeons define these things, for even those last are just the paid and corruptible engineers of the scientific world. There are still judges: scientific, legal and philosophical. And they still say the same as ever. All the author of Harry Potter did was adhere to them out of respect for her own humanity and own sex. You should be ashamed for the hubris to think you could write better, @jk_rowling
