This week I’m Berlin with @NoJoSnr for the @localfirstconf Earlier, I was sat chatting (passionately) about some deep p2p s**t with a group of people at lunch. Then I suddenly had a realisation: I’m essentially living in an episode of The Big Bang Theory, and I’m Penny🙂

Can’t believe nobody else has noticed this during this World Cup. On a human level, I’m genuinely concerned for Norway, and FIFA aren’t talking about this at all! 😔

JUST IN: Norway-England World Cup quarterfinal is forecast to be played in 107°F “feels-like” heat — hotter than either country’s all-time recorded air temperature.

This will be my first (and last) post about football. 👇 … but what Norway is doing in the World Cup is nothing short of amazing. No, I’m not talking about the team’s success or Haaland’s goals. I’m talking about how this event has changed Norway forever. If you’ve ever been to Norway, you know we’re quite reserved. A bit shy perhaps. (Although to be fair, considering there’s less than 6 million of us – in a land as large as Germany with 80 million – being a BIT reserved when we finally meet someone else in the elevator is probably quite understandable…) But what you may NOT know: we’re not just reserved when we meet new people… We’re reserved when it comes to our culture. Our history. Our heritage. We rarely celebrate it. We often even apologize for it. All because we don’t want to stick our necks out. (I think that’s the right term?). Even our national broadcaster, NRK, devotes more airtime to Eid Mubarak than they do to our national day, May 17, just because we’re afraid to upset anyone. Many of us would rather celebrate everyone else than ourselves if we’d risk the possibility of looking egocentric, nationalistic, or simply quite proud of our country! But the World Cup has changed this. This World Cup, with our great team leading the way, has awakened an entire nation. Norwegians (across ALL ages, backgrounds, and political views) are united in a way I’ve never witnessed before. The joy and celebration of our culture, our history, our heritage, our flag, our people, our team, our country, has never been stronger. And don’t get me wrong, I’m happy to live in a country where we CAN celebrate Eid Mubarak. Where we CAN celebrate different cultures, religions, different whatever. But I’m even MORE happy to live in a country where we’re not afraid to celebrate ourselves. Because if we don’t, who else will? So regardless of what happens tonight, regardless of whether England beats us 5-0, I’d say we’ve already won. Norway won. We won because we’ve got our country back. All it took was a few hours of football. Heia Norge 🇳🇴 Ro!
