@SkyeSharkie Not true. Very few people intend to sleep through their high. It’s considered a waste of the time spent to obtain drugs and a waste of the drugs to fall asleep after using. Most of these folks are so chronically sleep deprived that they can sleep in uncomfortable spaces.

I clearly worded this a bit too definitively: My point is that, sleeping standing up is heavily pressured, it's not really possible to sleep like this WITHOUT drugs, and I didn't mean to imply that it was. Being able to sleep like this as well as being numb to the effects of heat, sunburn, cold rain, snow, freezing temperatures, etc., are all incentives for taking the cheaper-than-food, easily-available-on-the-street drugs out there while homeless.

I feel like no one understands that people do this specifically because they'll go to jail if they lay or sit on the ground under "sit-lie ban" ordinances. It's actually an encouraging reason to take opiates as a homeless person as well, because they make it easier to master the strange skill of sleeping while standing up.

@SkyeSharkie and 3) they TRY to remain standing after smoking or injecting because sleeping through your high (by laying down or sitting) is a waste of a high. That said, laws against sitting and lying down are fucked up and we need more spaces for these folks to comfortably rest.

@SkyeSharkie As a nurse who works with predominantly substance users, I can say with total confidence that this isn’t true. People have this stance because they: 1) smoke fentanyl while standing up, and develop this posture from the high, 2) inject fentanyl and stand up shortly afterwards…
