Don't trust the water. It's a lesson children are taught from a young age in Six Nations of the Grand River. That's just daily life in this community — despite a state-of-the-art treatment plant that opened a decade ago. newsinteractives.cbc.ca/features/2024/…

The Municipality of South Bruce, a collection of Ontario farm towns about a 40-minute drive from Canada's largest nuclear power plant, has set the table for an historic vote on whether it will host a nuclear waste dump. cbc.ca/news/canada/wi… .

@cousins_ben Wouldn't count unless they were stolen in Canada. We were VERY strict with the criteria.

So I’ve got some unfortunate news to share: I am one of the journalists affected by the Bell layoffs today and am no longer with the CTV News web team. It’s tough, but I got to work with some great writers over the past five years, and I’m proud of the work I did there.

I'm old enough to remember 2021, when Bell was heavily criticized for laying off 200+ media employees one week after #BellLetsTalk Day. Wonder how that experience informed this year's decision to wait until two weeks after #BellLetsTalk Day to cut 4,800 positions.

Of all the things I did as a journalist, none ever felt more important than steadily, reliably covering the goings-on of local governments. It's awful that so many communities that don't have any professionals doing that vital work anymore. thecanadianpressnews.ca/national/a-fro…

Finally decided to dip a toe into Bluesky; those of you who are there should be able to find me with ease, if interested. (Not a guarantee that I'll have more to say there than I have here lately! And I'm not fully saying goodbye to this place yet either!)

Superb work by @ksieff Game, Set, Fixed. Must read for anyone interested in fixing. Will add the tennis fixers' comments about the story in upcoming days but for now - read it. Excellent. washingtonpost.com/world/interact…

The argument between Canadian news publishers and Google, Meta, etc. basically boils down to this: “You’re stealing our content by linking to it!” “Disagree, but OK, fine, we’ll get rid of the links.” “HOW DARE YOU!” cbc.ca/news/politics/…

Thinking of all my friends and former colleagues at @CTVNews, @CTVKitchener and the rest of the network today. 6% of Bell Media is a LOT of jobs being cut. Audiences will notice, and migrate elsewhere, and the cycle will continue.

This could 100% fundamentally change all those SEO-driven efforts and teams and is 100% why we should rely on trust and community engagement to build audience, not a platform or tech company. buff.ly/3BiedQX

RIP, Mr. Gordon Lightfoot. Saw him in a barn (actually) in Elora in 2017. His first line, which I assume he had been using since that time in 2010 when everyone on Twitter wrongly thought he had died: "I'm Gordon Lightfoot and rumours of my death have been greatly exaggerated."

For me, the M-F 9-5 schedule, increased compensation, less difficult work environment and no more fear of always-looming layoffs finally started to outweigh the fun and excitement. I'll always miss being a journalist, but I have no regrets about leaving the profession. Few do.

Local journalists are often seen as lesser. Universities tout their grads who go to large pubs & imply that those who go to small pubs are their weaker students. But local journalism is HARD. It is writing 2-3 stories a day. And taking the photos. And designing it. And editing it

Rolling Fork, MS, was hit by a major tornado tonight. The editor of the local paper is OK and on the job. She’s a one-woman show. If people like her weren’t covering the news in small, rural communities, who would? Support them.

@JamesDEJ I would guess that any government agency with a social media presence includes TikTok in its mandate. And I think you're right about the concerns being old hat, or at least there seeming not to be any new revelations behind the current bandwagon.
