“Un Songe” from 'A Dream' Series by Palestinian artist Jumana El Husseini Her practice frequently explored themes related to identity, displacement, and the rich cultural heritage of her homeland. She passed away in 2018 Paired with a poem by Palestinian Artist/Poet Toufic Abdel-Al Crossing to the Other Shore They dismounted, The night was nearing its end, Dawn was almost breaking. They carried my dreams, Saddled them upon the back of a steed. They stayed awake… They crossed… While the people slept. They slept, Dreaming of awakening— Of a fish on the shore of Acre, Of a child born alongside a flower, And a finger asleep on the trigger. They slept, dreaming of awakening— Of a fish on the shore of Jaffa, And of hope, sleeping in Gaza. They stayed awake… They crossed… While the people slept. They brought the sun back to my heights, With the blood of purity, with my song. And in the morning, I heard on my radio: Eight steeds Had crossed the sea to my land. The night was nearing its end, And dawn was almost breaking.
