It's a very loose live game so 4bets very common with even mid hands and in all these I thought I would just print. And then I started playing very poorly because I was so tilted

@dhaaruni when nonwhites wanna fuck whites it's privilege (good for whites) but when whites want to fuck Asians or whatever it's fetishization (bad for Asians). very interesting framing

TBC I never quite made it to gm back then I usually hovered around 3800 rating playing tracer and hanzo. I think I could have done it but the meta shifting to triple tank just made the game so unfun I ended up quitting.

I reinstalled overwatch and am low-key addicted to it again after not playing it for like 8 years. Game has really come into its own compared to launch. Feeling an intense tism urge to grind up to gm like old times

@felpix_ Elite schools only really matter for funneling into a small but highly influential fraction of jobs in finance/tech/law/politics. That's what people are complaining about missing out on. The complainers exaggerate this to include normal jobs a lot though

research funding is literally public information 6/10 top spots are public R1 state schools
felpix tweet media
Solus@Ersatz_Solus

@fredsoda From a research standpoint, while many state flagships are R1s, the broader "funding network" for the better projects are concentrated in top end universities and the culture is very aware of this. It's not that they can't contribute so much as there's latent lost potential.

Re: admissions discourse, I tied for highest score at my highschool on the Canadian equivalent of the math SAT and did not get into UBC (our equivalent of local flagship R1) while several people who I personally consider to be total morons were accepted. personally I just consider admissions to be gambling. I just went to a worse school and still make plenty of money working in bigtech

I was a little sad at the time but things have worked out pretty well for me so I don't think about it much, just got reminded of it by the recent discourse on here about American unis. Also I was visiting my gf on campus yesterday (she's a grad student) and got jealous at how pretty it was 😭

@flawedaxioms Yeah, admissions at UBC are total bs, I can’t say much since they’re my employer and I work in a student facing role, but some of the brightest friends from high school didn’t get in. Also we got rid of provincial exams so the grades required are ridiculous now.

@sally124445 I only applied to local schools in BC so I can't say. UBC was the only one here that required one. this was in 2018

@flawedaxioms I’m Canadian and none of the schools I applied to required essays or extra curriculars. UBC must be an outlier?

@sally124445 My grades were definitely above the average. I'm guessing they didn't like my essay, and I had no extra curriculas at all? I honestly have no idea how I didn't get in though.

@flawedaxioms All you have to do is have good grades above the schools average admission threshold in Canada???? Did u fail every other class lmao??? Also they don’t count provincial exams for university admissions????

@Authw8 @Empty_America fair enough, unfortunately BC only has 1 university that's internationally relevant and Canada overall has like 5 max and 4 of them require you to live in the shittiest weather in the universe (ont/qbc)

@flawedaxioms @Empty_America i don't think he specified local, i think he was assuming a scenario where you shotgun apply to a bunch of comparable schools in that range (pretty common practice in middle america)

I think @Empty_America is like basically correct in his position that The Sort is highly efficient for people like me (smart but not genius, working class parents). He's just somewhat out of sync with how random uni admissions are at the higher end. Even though I went to a "bad" university the system was still able to pipeline me into tech/finance/Hard Mathematic after a few more years.

@milesFF007F The grade inflation stuff is really silly. Luckily our 2nd/3rd tier universities in BC (sfu/UVic) are actually totally fine places to get a technical education and they take anyone with a pulse

@flawedaxioms Yeah I graduated in 2021 and didn’t have to take them. I wish we had some sort of standardized testing because all my friends from metro areas had grade inflation. One guy who got to “choose” what grade he thought he “deserved” in hs and failed out of UBC eng.
