Footilix Team Style Map - Matchday 1 👀 This map plots all 48 teams by average possession and shot volume, showing who controls matches, who creates pressure, and who is still missing one side of the equation. Türkiye, Spain, Uruguay and Switzerland sit in the control + volume zone, while Portugal had plenty of the ball but far less attacking output. Germany’s profile stands out too: elite shot volume, strong control, and one of the highest overall style scores. Which team’s style stands out most to you?

The weirdest detail here is the top two having the exact same attendance: 80,824. Mexico vs South Africa and Uzbekistan vs Colombia were both played at Mexico City Stadium, so that number probably says more about the stadium’s official full-attendance figure than pure coincidence.

After the first round of the group stage in FIFA WC 2026, it's fair to say the 48-team format is delivering. 24 games. 75 goals. Hardly any boring games. Tough to pick up the game of the tournament until now. Only a handful of one-sided games. A near-perfect refereeing and no controversial VAR drama. Banger goals. Big guns balling. Underdog stories. Right mix of attack and defence. Here are some of my thoughts on the teams. A thread (1/n)

Joško Gvardiol is one I’d add. Not because Croatia’s problems were only on him, but for a player of that level, England found way too much joy around that back line. I’d maybe also look at Júnior Alonso for Paraguay and Riechedly Bazoer from Curaçao! both had games where the defensive structure around them collapsed, but individually they still looked below the level needed.

Agree on the technical base. Uzbekistan did not look like a team just happy to be there. The concern is the gap between structure and threat. They completed 76% of passes, won 35 duels and had 13 crosses, so they were able to build territory and stay in the game physically. But Colombia created almost double the shot volume, 15 to 8, and had 10 shots inside the box to Uzbekistan’s 4. That feels like the real detail: Uzbekistan can compete between both boxes, but the penalty-area quality still has to catch up. Still very alive, especially if that midfield rhythm improves.

For a team at their first World Cup and coming in from the AFC, I thought Uzbekistan looked very well organized with a lot of good technical players. The details at both ends cost them. Not out of things in that group yet.

@Goallytics And now Harry Kane has joined the list. After his brace against Croatia, he moves level with Gary Lineker on 10 World Cup goals! With this England side still creating chances, the next target is the 11-goal group: Kocsis and Klinsmann.

The interesting part is how different the “middle class” wins looked. Sweden were direct and ruthless, USA played high-risk/high-volume, Norway had more control than expected, Australia won with only 28% possession, and Mexico’s opener was more about territory + game management than pure attacking dominance. Meanwhile some bigger names had the opposite issue: plenty of control, but not enough edge. Spain had huge possession and shot volume without reward, Portugal had 75% possession but only 7 shots, and Brazil/Belgium looked more functional than frightening. Feels like the gap is not just smaller; it’s less predictable stylistically!

What we've learned from the 1st round of World Cup games The middle class of teams is better than we may have anticipated. (Sweden/USA/Norway/Mexico/Australia/etc.) No top teams have emerged as clear favorites. Alot of teams yet to get into rhythm. @PSGTalk

The less obvious Czechia angle is that they were much more box-active than the scoreline suggests. Against Korea Republic they had 42 dangerous attacks, 5 corners, 15 crosses, and 5 shots inside the box. South Africa, by comparison, produced only 27 dangerous attacks, 1 corner, 8 crosses, and 1 shot inside the box against Mexico. So, this could become a territory game: Czechia forcing volume and set-piece pressure, South Africa trying to survive transitions without losing control emotionally.

Czechia v South Africa The second round of matches start today and we get the additional layer of complication around tactics following their first results. South Africa struggled against Mexico (as expected) but ending a match with 9 players is never a good way to get points.

@SantiSignals This makes me wonder how much the “heat table” changes if you add recovery time between exposed games. One open-air afternoon match is bad, but two with short rest could be the real separator.

“England came through the Texas heat” They didn’t. AT&T’s roof was shut. controlled, climate-conditioned, a committed 19 on the WBGT grid. Which is exactly why the World Cup heat table everyone’s building is wrong. the burden that actually punishes a player is open-air afternoon sun, and most contenders barely face it. Here’s who actually plays in the sun: open.substack.com/pub/santisigna…

Footilix Best XI - First Leg 👀 A 4-2-3-1 built on more than just goals and assists. This selection looks at overall influence, creativity, control, defensive work, balance, and match impact. Vozinha in goal, Germany’s defensive impact, Gravenberch + In-beom Hwang in midfield, and a front four of Díaz, Olise, Messi, and Isak. Who would make your XI?

Tournament trends after the first matchday 👀 The late-game window is where everything starts to happen. Goals, cards, and VAR incidents all peak in the final 15 minutes: ⚽ Goals: 22 in 76–90+ 🟨 Cards: 19 in 76–90+ 📺 VAR: 4 incidents in 76–90+ The biggest takeaway: matches are not just finishing late, they are getting more chaotic late. Teams push harder, coaches take more risks, players get tired, and the drama builds right before full-time. 76–90+ is becoming the tournament’s chaos window.
