@grahamwettone @forceinsights @Brick_Cop @gmhales Ever used to with the resulting average speed of PolCols increasing exponentially. Gone are the days of barely getting out of 3rd gear and the limitations to speed that brought. IRVS are now driven like go-karts

@Brick_Cop @gmhales @forceinsights Never had charter times in the 20 years i drove the 'fast car'/999 response. Anecdotal but im sure there were less collisions when we were not chasing the timer. Id do away with them tomorrow if I were chief.

@grahamwettone @Brick_Cop @gmhales It’s certainly appears to be an unnecessary pressure placed on all. Be interesting to see if there is any research associating them with increased risk. Will add it to the research list!

@forceinsights Look into hours worked. Lack of rest days and rest. Remember officers opt out of WTD as thanks to cuts it’s the only way they can do their job. I’m not suggesting that we limit the hours but it should be a consideration when shit happens.

Looking at the published research on this over a coffee. One big gap apparent already. No studies on impact of single versus double crewing on emergency driver safety. Seems a significant oversight when we consider cognitive loading of the emergency driver.
Force Insight@forceinsights

There is an argument to explore that a high speed driving assessment once every 5 years is inadequate to ensure competent execution of driving skills at speed & under the pressures of emergency driving & that it’s unreasonable to expect flawless performance.

@forceinsights The Fed are too distracted ATM. It certainly is something that they should have been fighting for years but spend way too much time infighting. Good luck with your research 👍🏼

@Graham_Goulden It definitely has a place. Just not on its own, but as part of a systems based solution that deals with training, cognitive loading (especially single crewed) & fatigue management

@forceinsights I agree but it also becomes about the individual and not enough on the peer. Why is that despite potential harm colleagues remain silent? What if colleagues felt more responsible, just like in aviation.

Why do we seem to be asking the same questions time after time and responding with the usual responses. Time for policing to focus more on wellbeing and that means a need for UK policing to become more selfish New blog grahamgoulden.com/2026/03/21/loo…

@Graham_Goulden You’ll see in my next post I talk about a systems approach to the issue that includes more than ability type training. Including examining cognitive loading

@forceinsights I would respectfully respond suggesting you look more into this concept. You talk about human factors in your bio. This is all about human factors under stress. As said its not a magic bullet but police culture needs more than simply ability type training.

@MedCasey @west_response A service not willing to invest in the necessary systems approach to safer emergency driving should perhaps be exposed to more culpability than the employee having to engage in it

@iofiv @_57dB @gmhales A service that wants to reduce harm needs realistic training, sensible management of in vehicle task demands, credible fatigue controls, serious learning from collisions & near misses. It also needs to be honest about the limits of human performance under pressure.

@JennyBa18222921 @gmhales Another very interesting area of research to explore. There are no fatigue related driving policies for response driving akin to what we see for long haul transport for instance.

@Graham_Goulden @HasisD @gmhales Not saying it’s not & should not be considered. But it’s unlikely to be the heavy hitter here compared to training, fatigue regulation & cognitive load management. It definitely has a place in a more comprehensive strategy though. 👍

@forceinsights @HasisD @gmhales Training a skill will always be important however it doesn’t remove the risk totally. Just now many cops don’t feel safe to act when harm is seen. You cannot separate from wellbeing which adds to the reasons cops don’t act. Active bystandership is a skill not being used enough

@cycleprawn Be a very good issue for Federations to take up I suspect. Am curious now so am going to look at what peer reviewed research is available.

@forceinsights That’s a big rock. Unfortunately The College of Policing and NPPC are sitting on this rock so it can’t be moved.

@HasisD @gmhales @Graham_Goulden I do think another area is worthwhile research is the cognitive load of single crewed response versus double crewed & the comparative risk profile of accidents

@HasisD @gmhales @Graham_Goulden There may be though think there is more value to be had in researching evidence based practice to ensure cops are trained to standard & not driving beyond capability due to skill fade and fatigue.

@gmhales @forceinsights I would love to know the amount of miles covered by the police, not just on blue lights but average driving about against bumps and crashes. No other organisation has you drive about doing nothing and going no where in particular as a Coe part of your role..

@forceinsights Agreed but that is the reality. Advanced car was reduced from 6 weeks to 4 weeks. A cost/ time saving move that reduced training. It’s not just driver training that’s affected. Training budgets were slashed and we are seeing/suffering the impact.

@cycleprawn Yep. Perhaps it’s time to look under the rocks & expose the research further that might clearly demonstrate the inadequacies of training & support investigation into incidents like this. We can better explain the adverse outcomes & hold forces accountable where necessary.
