And just like that, 12 years, 2 medals, a whole bunch of memories and wonderful friends later; I’m done. Policing you were my childhood dream. I’m so proud to have been one of you and do my small bit. You’ll always be part of me, but time to live and move on. #ThinBlueLine 🚨

I’ve just read this document so you don’t have to. It’s waffle. It mentions Senior Constable, but no process on how to become one or whether it comes with any salary increase or what the responsibilities are. And Temporary promotion is supported probation…🤷🏼‍♂️ #ThinBlueLine 🚨

Whilst speculation is so unhelpful, you can understand the obsession with murder inquiries. Netflix alone has over 50 ‘true crime’ documentaries, and the explanation that goes alongside those investigations is what gets people hooked. It’s the age we live in. #ThinBlueLine 🚨

The first thing you’re taught in Policing is to assume nothing, and to keep an open mind. Being honest about initial findings when there’s significant public interest is normal. Updating when new evidence has been found is also normal. Don’t believe the hype. #ThinBlueLine 🚨

I remember reading only a short time ago that the wonderful Sam Neil was looking forward to start work on new projects. His role of Dr Alan Grant in Jurassic Park was both iconic and unforgettable. Thinking of his friends, family and loved ones at this incredibly sad time. 🦕🎬

@Joanna__Hardy May I add, policing can’t respond to half the crimes called in, let alone create an elaborate conspiracy for the sake of literally nothing…🤦🏼‍♂️

Sometimes, investigations require a complex arrest strategy. Sometimes, those exist because there needs to be ongoing surveillance, so vital evidence to secure a conviction isn’t lost. Sometimes, those exist to ensure the suspect is taken into custody safely. Always, you won’t be told about it until a trial is over, and that’s never going to change. #ThinBlueLine 🚨

@CotswoldLadyB @BettyBoochichi2 He looks like an absolute mess. That’s a fact and the standard that used to be required in the police are no more. Sadly the state he is reflects the level of policing from probably the worst police service in the country. Pathetic post from a pathetic force.

I find it heartbreaking a police force has to post this kind of statement. Two nights ago I attended the #policebravery awards where I heard some extraordinary stories about our police going out there and placing themselves in danger to save others. Yet, after all that, some people still feel it’s acceptable to sit behind their keyboards and spout contempt and evil at the very people they would need if they ever found themselves in the same predicament the officers from Bedfordshire Police have been facing. I wish they would just take a moment and THINK about what they’re writing. They conveniently forget behind every uniform is a person, with feelings just like you and I. With families who might read that drivel about their loved ones, just like you and I. Yes, I absolutely know there is the very odd officer who perhaps should not be working in law enforcement, but 99.999% of our police officers are amazing - just amazing and when they see negativity online they feel it too - just like they have felt for the family who have been murdered. Just like they feel for the family of Anne Widdecombe after the tragic news yesterday. What is happening to our world where we have a society who jumps on the anti-police bandwagon, and attacks the very people who will, without hesitation, be there when they have their worst day? It’s a pile on they could really do without. Let them do their job and let them do it in peace, and with our support - not the judgemental unkindness which seems to the norm. Before anyone posts, they should themselves this: 1. Would I say this to the persons face? 2. Am I in position of knowing what really happened? 3. Would I be happy if someone said this about a member of my family or a friend. 4. Do I have the authority to pass judgement? 5. Would I enjoy it if someone said that to me? If the answer to any of those questions is no - then scroll on. Words have consequences. Did you know suicide remains one of the leading causes of death among working-age police officers? Do we on social media want to be part of that problem? Would one of these so-called smart comments be the thing that sends a police officer over the edge? Please be kind - and please be especially kind to our police officers, they see and hear and have to deal with the sorts of things that would give you and I nightmares. I see what these remarkable people do, every day. I know what they go through every day. I wish there was just a little more respect. As you were…
Bedfordshire Police@bedspolice

While dealing with such an unimaginably tragic case and working 24/7 to secure an arrest, our Senior Investigating Officer has also had to deal with hundreds of negative comments on social media about his appearance. This isn’t acceptable. Police officers are humans too.

Last November I was sat on a carrier on the way back from a Public Order deployment, when the news broke that a serious incident was taking place on a train in Huntingdon. What I didn’t know at the time, was that the call handler who took the first 999 call was just weeks into her job with @EastEnglandAmb. Due to her cool, calm and collected manner, emergency services were on the way in minutes to stop the attack, help the injured and take the suspect into custody. Last night call handler Nicole and the British Transport Police Control Room won the Judges Special Award at the Control Room Awards for their tenacity and dedication to look after the public. Huge congratulations, and I love that these awards highlight the heroes behind the headsets that the public rarely see! @Brick_Cop @ukhomeoffice In Ireland back in the day we had a one man Squadra Volante known as Lugs Brannigan who’d take on public order gangs on his own, book about his life well worth a read

Something that truly needs to change in Policing is the use of the word ‘optics’. Last night a colleague was knocked out by a bottle, during a Public Order situation, needlessly. If you’re policing a group of football fans known to throw missiles and fireworks at Police Officers and each other, Police it with fully kitted Public Order Officers. It doesn’t look aggressive, it looks perfectly reasonable in the circumstances. Take the Italian State Police - Polizia Di Stato - for example. I had the pleasure of working with them earlier this year. They have their own ‘Flying Squad’ or ‘Squadra Volante’ to deal with the most hardened criminal gangs and Public Order incidents. When asked about their uniforms and if they worried about ‘optics’ they laughed, hard. They wear it to be identified and to keep them safe whilst dealing with violent and volatile situations. That’s all that should matter. #ThinBlueLine 🚨

Now a murder inquiry has been launched, I see we are suffering a deluge of nonsense from journalists and former officers alike to make it sound even more profound. All murders are tragedies, pointless speculation and making things up about policing and process isn't helping.

@Hill_Darran @Brick_Cop @Tim47222 @ukhomeoffice An uncomfortable truth for some, if not outright denied. “De-escalation” is a term thrown around like it’s a magic spell that works in all situations. Yet anyone with a functioning brain knows this to be untrue.

@Brick_Cop @Tim47222 @ukhomeoffice We’ve shifted over the last few decades by perpetuating the myth that policing is now predominantly soft skills. When in fact violence needs to meet it with courage, resolve & controlled violence. A keyboard will only assist you after the violence has happened.
