@T_MinusEschaton @river_is_nice I don't have a PhD and think you're confusing different threads, as I have not cited multiple studies. I do think that being raised in an oppressive religious tradition with rampant child sex abuse was more than typically sad in a US context, but the world is full of sorrows.

"Phd" woman whose first comment was "how nice for you that you're not raised" and whose second comment read "I'm sure it's nice to have the kind of life you've had" and whose separate replies are replete with 'do you see this study' but still damned me for suggesting that "anecdata" are required to impugn every person that you hate. You're really a disgusting person, and that was made clear from the very beginning. What you should have just said is 'believe in my moral panic or I'll continue to hector you like the pathetic HR administrator that I am'

There are no good stats on this but anecdotally, I’ve met an alarming number of people who were sexually abused by their fathers/older brothers in the evangelical homeschooling world. Probably at least 20% if I had to guess. Not a shock as to why: Patriarchal family structure. Any frank discussions around sex are taboo, and the kids are really naive about it and often don’t realize what’s happening to them or that it isn’t normal, even at an age when they probably should. They usually don’t have friends outside of their church or access to adults they could confide in who aren’t friends/relatives of their parents. Often don’t have unmonitored internet access, either, which would allow them to google this stuff and figure out what’s going on/what to do about it. Basically the perfect environment for a child predator to operate. It’s incredibly fucked up and sad.

Joseph Duggar, who starred on the TLC show “19 Kids and Counting” alongside his family, was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly sexually abusing a 9-year-old girl. His arrest comes several years after his older brother, Josh Duggar, was accused of molesting five underage girls, including four of his sisters. After being arrested in 2021 on charges of receiving and possessing child sexual abuse material, Josh Duggar was convicted and sentenced to 12 years in prison. variety.com/2026/tv/news/j…

@T_MinusEschaton @river_is_nice I'm literally just telling you CSA is rampant in strict religious subcultures and don't know anything about your life other than you have no experience with them.

@foreverbiscoff @river_is_nice Although incest was unknown to me and probably virtually everyone I knew as a child, other varieties of unhappiness, misfortune and bad family life were certainly not and you'd be deeply mistaken for thinking so.

@LilUziVartan @CartoonsHateHer I mean, "every woman I know who reads smut does in fact want to fuck a 9 foot tall monster man hybrid against their will" is not ambiguous, but it's fine if you want to walk it back. Against will=rape. CNC=not rape. Not actually complicated!

@foreverbiscoff @CartoonsHateHer That's not what I said and I specifically clarified multiple times it mapped into *consentual*acts irl. Again, you are being stupid on purpose here, I guess it's fun for you?

@T_MinusEschaton @river_is_nice People just don't want to believe so many people rape children, noted. I was not a victim of sexual abuse myself but it was the worst background ambience ever. I'm sure it's nice to have had the kind of life where you can be like, hmm, all anecdata!

For what it's worth, Grok more or less confirms my assumption that there is no real preexisting data aggregate on this issue (x.com/i/grok/share/b…). That's not to say the problem doesn't exist at the scale you assert, but I do wonder how concentrated it is in specific congregations (of, say, 7th Day Adventists) as opposed to universally a feature of religious fundamentalist communities.

@CathyYoung63 And about forgiving the Nazis who murdered your sister for protecting the Jews, an intensely Christian narrative that might be off-putting to some. (I do not mean that as a critique--she's writing for an audience that understands the Christian imperative of forgiveness.)

@LilUziVartan @CartoonsHateHer You said women want to be raped by giant monsters, and I'm telling you they don't IRL, regardless of any fantasy. It's fine if you don't believe me. I don't know or especially care if men's porn preferences reflect more of what they really "want" as long as it's legal behavior.

@TwinkTheory @river_is_nice Among other guesses I have about why, no one would rush to circle the wagons around an abuser in this milieu, which is not remotely true in religious subcultures.

@TwinkTheory @river_is_nice I'm upper middle class and mostly secular, and child sex abuse surely exists in this milieu, but I'm haven't seen it. It is definitely less prevalent than it was in the low-income extremist group in which I was raised ...

@T_MinusEschaton @BrainbowManic @river_is_nice I was raised fundamentalist Seventh-Day Adventist, and absolutely yes. It's a pattern common to isolated religious sects that see themselves as besieged/threatened by the outside world and are also deeply uncomfortable with sexuality in general.

@T_MinusEschaton @river_is_nice It's at least 20%, and I'd put it higher. How nice for you that you were not raised in a restrictive religious subculture, and how weird that you think you can speak authoritatively about their dynamics! Child sex abuse is absolutely rampant. I would put it at 30% plus myself.

@river_is_nice AT LEAST 20%? I'm not homeschooled, homeschooling, nor Evangelical, and I can instantly recognize what nonsense that is. Move the decimal one, maybe two places to the left, and you'll be in the right neighborhood

@river_is_nice The other issue is protecting the in-group at the expense of kids, which there is huge pressure to do in these subcultures. Kids aren't believed or if they are, it's still swept under the rug as a fluke or elder so and so's struggle with sexual sin. And so it continues.

@LilUziVartan @CartoonsHateHer CNC is different from wanting actual sexual assault, obv.? But please explain female sexuality to me more. I'm so desperate for a random Internet guy's opinion about what women really want.

@foreverbiscoff @CartoonsHateHer Obviously you can't desire real non consent but just like most guys who watch porn DO want an MFF, it's no great stretch that women do want kinky sex irl but in a safe environment with humans

@CartoonsHateHer Like, people would hit on me in front of my husband, guys would literally crowd around me, and it was disorienting but mostly flattering. My husband has feared I'm too pretty for him ever since. (I'm not, maybe have a slight facial edge, but he's smart and tall!)

@CartoonsHateHer I got married young just before my spouse started a PhD at an Ivy. I've always been considered attractive enough, but I have small boobs and glasses. In "Ivy City," my "type" was next level, like I went from "pretty" to "city prom queen."

A husband-hunting expert released a guide for how women can look sexier to find a rich, handsome husband--but it was light on proof. I have the proof to back up (and refute) some of her claims. Link in replies.

@CaitlinPacific @ericowensdc No, students have to get approved by a university disability center and verify their adaptations with professors. No need to fear monger. My handwriting is barely legible bc of a coordination disorder, and I have always made a living by writing because I learned to type young.
