When I was 24 (2007), I went to Yuma Arizona for a winter league as a last-ditch effort to get signed to an indy ball league. I had just lost most of a $60k bankroll & showed up devastated w/like $5k to my name & desperate to leave poker behind for good to finally fulfill my dream of playing pro ball.
80 guys ages 18 to 28 showed up & were quickly divided among 4 teams. I was assigned to the Canada Miners alongside future Blue Jays' starter, @Scott48Richmond. He was a hard throwing righty who clearly had big league stuff but as a Canadian coming out of Oklahoma state just after 9-11 he was passed over due to difficulty getting a work visa (or at least that's my memory of how he ended up floating through indy ball). He and his buddy Reggie were two of the best humans a shy kid at the end of his road could have ever encountered. I picked their brains day in and day out as, particularly Scott, breezed through the short season dominating hitters.
He wasn’t the only one though. There was a young 22 year old there getting in work for the Yuma Scorpions. He was drafted in the late rounds by the SF Giants and drew a lot of focus from the coaches assigned to help us develop. I’ve never seen movement like this. His 2 seamer had more break than most everyone else’s slider. His off speed stuff would sweep from one batter’s box to the next. But of course the thing everyone focused on was his lack of velocity. It was late Jan and there was still frost on the field so I doubt he was anywhere near maxing out, but still, he was unhittable & barely breaking 86.
One day a group of us were in the hot tub after a double header. Aside from suffering through a painful shoulder strain, I was struggling w/my overall lack of talent. I had the mindset of a power pitcher, but the velocity of a knuckleballer and these prospects were getting their fair share of highlights off me. I recall sharing my struggles and it was that 22 year old major league prospect that gave me better advice than 2 decades worth of high school and college coaches had previously. He explained the art of pitching backwards. Using off speed to set up the fast ball. Playing chess w/the hitter, not brute forcing it. It was advice I needed 10 years prior, before I had ever stepped on the mound for the first time, or into a casino for that matter. I had the same bulldog, all or nothing mindset when I played poker, and when things went poorly I tried to reach deep and throw a little bit harder to dig myself out. For the first time I think I fully understood the importance of mind/muscle connection. My outings got better and we ultimately made the championship, losing to the Scorpions.
As the league wound down and contracts were handed out I learned my baseball career was over, but my poker career gained new life. On our only weekend off during the season I managed to win the inaugural Paradise Casino Championship which guaranteed $20k to 1st. Shortly after returning home, and partly thanks to that score, I committed to moving to vegas with the boys. The rest was history.
Fast forward to 2010 and I’m in the midst of a career year, including a 43rd in the World Series Main Event… I wasn’t the only one from that winter league to have World Series success. That young prospect just so happened to be pitching in the World Series and dominating the same way we had witnessed in the Winter League.
When I tell you that @SergioRomo54 is EXACTLY the guy that the video below portrays just know it’s no bullshit. One of the greatest talents & sincere humans I’ve had the good fortune of getting to brush elbows with. I only wish I had thought to have him, Scott, and Reggie sign my cap of my final outing. 🧢

When kids at spring training asked for Sergio Romo's autograph, he had them sign his hat first. He wore that hat on the mound during his last outing. "If this is was the last hat I was going to wear in the big leagues... I figured it would be nice to not go in there alone."
