V sad to say Air Cdre Charles Clarke has died aged 95. Shot down in 1944, 3 of his crew perished & he ended up in Stalag Luft 3 just before the Great Escape. He was a wonderful man, a great friend, a supporter of countless charities & a giant of our nation. Blue skies Sir. RIP

So sad to hear Air Commodore Charles Clarke has passed. Privileged to have known him a real hero P.O.W during the #GreatEscape #TheLongMarch A true gentleman & friend who put his life on the line for our country. We owe him a great debt. @SoldierOnAwards #BomberCommand

@OnlyMeWaffling @JohnNicholRAF When I was young we had to take our family war stories in. I think my teacher thought I had made it up. My Mum has so many wonderful stories about him including the day he came home from the war. Can you imagine?!

Very sad news about Air Cdre Charles Clarke OBE - WW2 Lancaster aircrew, Stalag Luft 3 POW, a remarkable individual who will long be remembered for his courage, exceptional career and enduring support to the RAF. An inspiration to all of us.
