Managers shouldn’t take actions based on what Gary Neville or Jamie Carragher will say after the game. Do what you believe in. Rosenior decided to start with 7 defensive minded players, one midfielder, two attackers without a runner. He wanted to defend and Arsenal were perfectly fine with it. Rosenior believed that the last 30 minutes would be enough to score a goal or two against the best defense in the league. If 30 mins were enough for him, why didn’t he attack the first 30 mins and then sat back to defend? Rosenior had 90 mins to score a goal and he chose to do it in 30 mins against a team who don’t concede many. Was that a sound strategy? That’s the only question people need to ask. I kind of get why Rosenior did what he did. But if he was managing my team I would hate the approach. This was one of my issues with Amorim. He wasn’t brave enough. He was so conservative. As a manager of a big club like United, you have to be brave. If you lose then you lose, but at least go for the game. Don’t be a coward trying to defend a 2-3 scoreline. Maybe Rosenior’s approach works at a smaller club, but not at the heavyweights like United and Madrid.
