NEW: Iran gave the U.S. a new proposal for reaching a deal on the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and lifting the naval blockade first, and postponing nuclear negotiations for a later stage. My story on @axios

Short and to the point:
No one in the Iranian regime will accept U.S. terms for a deal, not the IRGC commander, not his successor, nor anyone else.
This isn’t about individuals; it’s about a system built ideologically on hostility to the West and a commitment to preserving its strategic autonomy.
The search for a “silver bullet” didn’t work in the past, and it won’t work now.
If the United States wants Iran to truly capitulate, it would require regime change. Otherwise, it will have to reach an accommodation with the regime as it is. There are no real middle options.

New: US military officials are developing new plans to target Iran’s capabilities in the Strait of Hormuz in the event the current ceasefire with Iran falls apart, multiple sources tell me. Another option — target individual Iranian military leaders & other “obstructionists” US officials believe are actively undermining negotiations. cnn.com/2026/04/23/pol…

Told @WSJ: The mixed messaging from Tehran on the status of the Strait is more a reflection of a truly incongruous U.S. stance than infighting in Tehran.

Where have the Islamabad negotiations reached?
"Yes, some issues have reached conclusion. Some issues have not. There are places where we insist on those issues, truly, these demands of ours are not negotiable. They're not."
Parliament Speaker Ghalibaf says they had progress, but the distances are still great and some fundamental points remain. He added that America must decide to gain the trust of the Iranian nation. This is the most important step the Americans can take.
