Another thing we've been talking about in our little circle. Leftists aren't communists. None of the talkers on the Left are offering to reduce their own spending on things like multiple houses or jet fuel or other luxuries that are available only to the elites. On both sides of the aisle. They want the rest of us to do that, and they define these luxuries broadly to include just about anything that the homeless and illegal aliens can't afford. The problem they have with the benefits you mention is that they are available to all but accrue mostly (they would say only) to people who compete well in the system (they would say game the system successfully). This is the new communist thinking. And just like the old communist thinking, it only applies to peons like us, never to the elite.

@feelsdesperate Yeah, you have to be pretty dense to argue for any version of “communism lite” at this point. The benefits of free enterprise, open markets, limited liability, non-centralized pricing, etc., are almost universally accepted outside explicitly Marxist circles.

Ok. This is an interesting clip. This is one of the first times I’ve seen a politician running explicitly against the progressive NGO kleptocracy. He’s wrong that these people are ‘socialists’ (they’re kleptocrats who use leftist rhetoric to legitimize themselves) but that’s fine. It’s still very effective rhetorically. The right needs to bring this attack up to scale: the purpose of the DSA is not ‘socialism,’ it’s to maximize public revenue extraction so that upper middle class jobs doing fake work can be doled out to political allies (surplus elites, failed creatives, etc.). It’s important for the public to understand what’s going on here and where their money is going and not only can this be an effective cudgel against the left, but smashing these rice bowls can have all sorts of other positive externalities for our politics.

@feelsdesperate You misunderstand why Pratt’s rhetoric is so potent. He isn’t saying “they’re not real socialists because they’re kleptocrats.” He’s saying “socialists are kleptocrats.” It’s succinct and puts the onus of rebuttal on socialists to distinguish themselves from kleptocracy.
